PortAventura

A close up on PortAventura

Holidays in PortAventura

From high-speed rollercoasters to first-class performances, we round up PortAventura’s best bits.

PortAventura is spread over a huge area just outside Salou, on Spain’s Costa Dorada. Not only is it the mainland’s biggest theme park, it’s also home to Europe’s tallest and fastest hypercoaster, not to mention a clutch of smart hotels. Plus, it’s an easy train ride from Barcelona if you fancy a day in the city. We take a look at its other bragging rights below…

The park

PortAventura

The rides at PortAventura Park are divvied-up between 6 zones – Mexico, China, Mediterrània, Far West, Polynesia and SésamoAventura. Each area has been put together with real attention to detail. Everything feels authentic – mariachi bands drift out of the speakers in Mexico, and Oriental drums and Tibetan wind chimes stack the shop shelves in China. It’s reflected in the restaurants, as well. The menus in each zone are themed, so you can eat your way around the world.

The A to Z of rides

The A to Z of rides

The coasters at PortAventura Park have managed to clock up a few awards. Shambhala, which is modelled on an expedition of the Himalayas, is the highest and fastest hypercoaster in Europe. Then there’s Furius Baco, which has an accelerator that goes from 0 to 135 kilometres in 3-and-a-half seconds. Dragon Khan, meanwhile, is the tummy-tester of the bunch, with eight 360-degree loops to brave. It’s not all adrenaline-pumpers, though. There are teacups and flying swings for little ones, too.

Showtime

Showtime

Around 15 shows for all ages are performed daily, and they don’t just run through the day, but late into the evening, too. There are also not-to-be-missed fireworks displays. The hottest event in the summer is FiestAventura, a spectacular show featuring fire stunts and fireworks, which runs from June to September.
