Retrace the past in Spinalonga

Spinalonga hit the headlines a few years ago as the setting for Victoria Hislop’s best-selling book, The Island. The novel is a tragic tale, but it’s nothing compared to Spinalonga’s real-life story. Up until 50 years ago, the island was used as a leper colony. The diseased inhabitants were treated well during their stay, but the graveyards on the island are a sign of many sad endings.
