Your guide to Cavelossim, Goa
Holidays to Cavelossim take you to a laid-back village in southern Goa, where shack bars and restaurants line the white sand beach.
Inspired by Indian temples and Portuguese colonial architecture, this gorgeous garden hotel is a calming retreat footsteps from a sandy beach.
Indian temples were the inspiration behind The Leela. Almost everywhere you go you’re greeted by Hindu icons, giant stone pillars and elaborate domes that seem to summon up a near-religious sense of calm.
It suits the hotel’s peaceful location down to the ground. Although the Leela sits on the edges of Cavelossim, its house-style annexes are scattered around 75 acres of tranquil gardens. Tropical touches are everywhere – tinkling waterfalls, lagoons and towering palms – with the hotel’s two pools tucked in the middle. Part of the gardens is even given over to the hotel’s 12-hole par 3 golf course.
The beach is quiet, too. Just a stone’s throw away, this sweep of gold hardly ever gets crowded. One of the best places to soak up its charms is the Leela’s Susegado seafood grill. Right on the sands, this thatched-roof number is perfect for enjoying the catch of the day. Talking of food, the Leela has plenty of other restaurants to choose from. At the Riverside, high-end Italian cuisine is served overlooking the river winding through the gardens. The Café, meanwhile, whisks up buffet breakfasts and light Asian dishes. For fine dining, though, the Jamavar is your place. The hotel’s signature restaurant, this opulent eatery focuses on exquisite Indian cuisine against a backdrop of carved wooden screens.
More relaxation comes in the form of the spa. With its glass-brick walls and bamboo and teak furniture, it’s a soothing setting for Ayurvedic rituals and Asian-style massages.
Last but not least, the rooms are lovely. Blending Indian and Portuguese colonial styles, they’re kitted out with richly carved wooden beds, elegant low-backed armchairs and louvered shuttered doors opening onto garden patios or balconies. The club suites, meanwhile, are the height of indulgence and come complete with a personal butler and in some, a private plunge pool, too.
