Long Haul

White sands, impossibly blue waves, and coconut palms swaying in the breeze – sometimes, only an exotic escape will do, and that’s where our long-haul holidays come in. They tick off some of the world’s most tropical spots.

You can take your pick from elephant-trekking in Thailand, exploring Mayan ruins in Mexico, and tanning on the beach in Aruba, to name a few.

Nowhere says long haul luxury like the Caribbean. In this part of the world, temperatures rarely dip below 25 degrees, and every beach looks like it belongs on a postcard. Each destination offers something a bit different, too. Jamaica and Barbados showcase the region's colonial history, the Dominican Republic stays true to its Spanish roots, and Aruba gives you a taste of the Netherlands.

On Mexico's Caribbean Coast, purpose-built resorts edge tropical beaches, jungle tours and watersports are easy to come by, and reminders of Mexico's Mayan past are never more than a daytrip away. Over on the Pacific Coast, 800 kilometres of beach are backed by the Sierra Madre Mountains, where you can give zip-lining and abseiling a go.

The Land of Smiles has something to keep everyone happy. In busy Bangkok, floating markets and elaborate temples share landmass with fancy restaurants and cocktail bars. Over in the west, popular holiday resorts such as Phuket, Krabi and Khao Lak line up flawless beaches, tropical jungle scenery, and off shore islands that beg to be explored.

Costa Rica’s landscape leaves you wanting for nothing. This slice of Central America gives you Caribbean beaches to one side, and Pacific beaches to the other. In the middle, mountains and volcanoes are wedged in between spectacular rainforests and national parks. Zip-lining, tubing, horse-riding and surfing are just a few of the ways you can get hands on.

Goa is the perfect introduction to India. Set on the country’s west coast, this former Portuguese colony has a unique east-meets-west feel to it. As you wander around, you’ll stumble upon colonial buildings, crumbling churches and street vendors selling fusion cuisine. Then there are the beaches to consider. The 66-mile stretch of coast is home to some of the best sands in the country.

Mauritius pairs paradise beaches with a healthy dose of culture and adventure. Swathes of white and gold sand wrap around the coast, fringed by coral reefs and Robinson Crusoe-esque deserted islands. Move away from the edges, and you can tour Hindu temples, hike to forest-cloaked volcano craters, and sip vanilla-laced rum on sugar plantations.

Thumb-thick cigars, rum, salsa, Che Guevara in his black beret, and vintage Cadillacs are just a few of the icons of this distinctive Caribbean island. Outside the hectic cities you’ll find miles of pearl-white sandy beaches to bask on, all lapped by bath-warm waters.

America's Sunshine State is the theme park capital of the world. Holidays here have put Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando® Resort and SeaWorld® in the palm of your hand. When you're not tackling rollercoasters, you've got the area's restaurants, shopping malls and golf courses to think about. Venture to the coast, meanwhile, and some of America's best beaches await.
