This is a Couples only hotel. It has a very relaxed atmosphere and the staff are very pleasant. It is furnished in a contemporary style. It is very clean with nothing out of place. The swimming pool and rooftop hot tub are immaculate. There are plenty of sun beds for everyone. I believe there are 118 bedrooms but the only time the hotel feels busy is at evening meal when sometimes we had to wait to be seated. On average a few minutes. The food is well prepaired but I would describe it as average. We are used to staying in hotels where ironing facilities are provided in the bedroom .In this hotel they do not offer this service. The staff allowed us to use their iron which is kept in small storage room behind the reception. We were on 5th floor so we had to carry our clothes down to 1st foor. I went to shops and bought an iron. You are also provided tea and coffee sachets in the bedroom on your 1st day if you use these and require more there is a charge of 8 Euros. Very unusual. To buy a bottle of water at reception is 1.5 euros. We found the water from the tap was safe to use for tea etc.The entrance to the hotel is very steep so I would suggest no use for disabled or infirm. That can be said for Madeira. We were on the 5th floor with a sea view room. This hotel is set in a residential area and there is a house directly opposite which leaves its dog outside all day. It likes to bark at anything that moves. This and the passing motor bikes can clearly be heard. The young couple who form part of the entertainments group were lovely, they are great singers and are great for local info etc. There is a local bar/resteraunt one street down from the hotel. It is called the Whitehouse. The staff there are fabulous and it is very popular with tourists and locals. 2.50 Euros for a large glass of wine and lunchtime food/snacks are also very inexpensive. Overall this is a lovely hotel with a very relaxed feeling. In my opinion it just lacks those tiny little things I mentioned to make it just really great.
chaotic start on landing trying to get on to transfer but ok after sorted right coach. bags taken in van and were all ready to take to room after coach dropped us at bottom of rather steep slope up to hotel. check in very easy as room number seem to be sorted prior to getting there check in staff really pleasant. had seaview room apparently bigger balcony, well worth it. beds bit to firm for my liking but ok. bathroom good and really powerful shower. room safe free to use but unusually strange to have to pay for tea /coffee after initial free first ones! bit noisy at night with traffic but seemed quieter after eleven not that it bothered us after a few drinks went straight to sleep. drinks dearer than pub on next road down 3.90 hotel 2.70 white house pub but you would expect that. entertainment was ok but most people went to their rooms at 9.30 weird!! but there seemed to be more elderly than younger ones. good looking pool quite a few sun beds although we never used them.decent games room snooker/pool table, darts ,table tennis.a games deck golf net putting area and clubs provided. rooftop hot tub and loungers magnificent view over funchal and harbour. all the staff were really good in particular paulo andrenade . welcome meeting ok and took ages after to book trips as only one rep taking bookings wasted 2 odd hours could have done other things.and find after lot of local trips pick up from hotel and are half the price. rep never spoke to us again after buying her trip oversight or not bothered??? food ok breakfast better than dinner water in your room 1.50 water at dinner table 3.50 dont get it!! nice walk to funchal taxi back to get up the hills 5 euro good value. overall savoy gardens great base would highly recommend it.
The hotel is dated, food of limited selection. In saying this, there was always something to eat even with the limited variety. Derelict buildings, and some residential homes surround the hotel. There is constant dog barking as some of the locals keep dogs. This went on morning noon and night. On the Sunday this did not start until after 10.00 am. I appreciate that this is not the hotels fault, however it does begin to grate when trying to relax. Our room had an ant problem - this was dealt with quickly by house keeping but did eventually reoccur. The coach transfer as part of the package drops you off approximately 200 yards away from the hotel at a busy intersection. You must return to this point when leaving at the end of your stay. The reason is that the coach is unable to get to the hotel as it is up a severe incline with narrow excess. This is why your baggage is collected separately by the tour operator, loaded into vans and transported separately to and from the hotel. Every ones cases were outside the airport entrance when we arrived by coach, they appeared to be unattended and we gathered ours together and walked away without being challenged. This may have worked well in the past for the tour operator, but in this day and age, I do not believe that this is an acceptable practice. Especially as at check in from the UK, one of the questions asked is did you pack the items yourself and has your baggage been out of your sight or control for any period of time. We were told by our rep that the hotel has an arrangement with a local taxi firm and that they would request a taxi for you from the front desk. This is some arrangement as when the taxi arrived, it had already clocked up 4 euros and the meter started moving up immediately. This gave a total cost to Funchal of 7.10 euros before tip. As a comparison, the return journey started with 2.5 euros and only cost 4.20 euros before tip. This hotel is defiantly not for the less healthy or those with walking difficulty.
Hotel Savoy Gardens is excellent in every way. One small niggle is that although tea making facilities are advertised by Thomson as being available in the room I feel it should be made clear in the brochure that they do not come free of charge. The standard of service and cleanliness could not be faulted. This was our second visit and would highly recommend this hotel and holiday to anyone.
