Stayed at the Riviera Princess hotel in October this year and really enjoyed the break. All the staff and reps could not have been more helpful and happy all the time. Food in the buffet restaurants very good but the international restaurants let the place down. Dissapointed that the Tapas was closed. The Mexican and Oriental were dissapointing and the grill was average. Found the best of the lot was the Italian. Pool area and beach brilliant and had a really relaxing time. Would go back to Mexico and possibly stay a little nearer to Cancun. Would advise that the cleaning staff make sure that all the linen, including face cloths are changed as we found we did not have face cloths all the time.
The Grand Riviera Princess Hotel is beautiful and the grounds are kept spotless by staff 24hrs a day. All inclusive with most premium brands included and where they are not there is usually a good alternative (Jim Beam instead of Jack Daniels). Buffet restaurant is a bit hit and miss. Each night is themed with food from all over the world. Unfortunately the country they didnt do well was Mexico! Many restaurants on site and not all are inclusive. I recommend booking restaurants as they provide waiter service and great food. Mumma Mia is great and would recommend the veal. The oriental restaurant has Teppanyaki with small groups having food cooked in front of them with knife tricks and tequilas thrown in. Dont worry about going hungry, the sports bar provides hotdogs and nachos with burgers cooked to order 24 hrs a day. Pools are extensive with hundreds of beds. There are outside and swim up bars that serve all types of beverage and cocktails. Every evening the entertainment team put on a show but this is the usual miming and dance type affair. A further professional open air presentation most nights outside the main bar can be very good. This bar also provides live music in the evenings. The beaches are clean and we had no problems getting a sun bed. The sea is clear but be careful of the rocks on the sea bed, they can be very sharp (water shoes recommended). Negative, Food in the buffet was not as good as it should be, often not very hot. Sheets sometimes felt damp when changed. Walkways are marble in and smooth concrete out, so when it rained they are like ice rinks. Be very careful as I saw a number of people slip over. The hotel is in the middle of mangrove and there are loads of Mosquitos. Take repellent and anti histamine. Entertainment outside of the resort you will need a taxi as Playa Del Carmen is too far to walk and there is nothing in walking distance of hotel. Tipping, I took Pesos. 20 Pesos is approximately £1 and enough when giving a tip. You dont need to tip every time you get a drink, now and then is appreciated. Mexican earn very little ( 4-5 pounds a day) with tips the staff do very well. Dont expect a bargain in Mexico as they price with tourists in mind. Be very careful at the airport when buying food. Three meals (one a childs) at Burger King cost approximately £30.When leaving the country there is an airport tax of approximately £40 per person that needs to be paid in cash so remember to have this with you on departure.
