This hotel is in urgent need of a refursbishment and is more like a 3* than 5*. The room we were allocated had several faults, the bathroom needed totally replacing, we were unable to use the bath and there was a constant smell coming from it, the air conditioning is old and inefficient and the front cover kept falling off, our front door knob kept also kept dropping off, mosquito door kept coming off its slide, the TV was very old and two of the electric sockets were hanging off the wall, to name a few. In two weeks our linen was only changed once and that was only after we pointed this out. There was a big selection of food but when you looked at it the majority was different salads, the food was overall very bland, with hardly any quality meat. The food provided at the beach restaurant had a smaller choice but was of a better quality. The entertainment worked hard at the Hotel but the professional shows were poor. In our two weeks we saw the same dancers four times - most of the other evenings the entertainment was supplied by guest participation. On the positive side the hotel is in a great location, the beach is stunning, the staff at the hotel worked hard and were always pleasant. The hotel is located within easy access to Playa del Carmen either by using the hotel shuttle bus or by taxi. The shuttle bus always ran on time. If this hotel was refurbished and the food quality improved, with the current staff, it could well be classed as a 5* but it is not at the present time.

Lovely resort, hotel was very good, with very good food, excellant entertainment staff and extremely helpfull waiting staff. The Xel-Ha water park nearby was brilliant and well worth it, make sure you get in there early !! Paticuarly enjoyed the sea trek and snorkelling. Xcaret is also good but give yourself all day to get around it all. The Delphinus swim with Dolphins experience is a must do too. If you want a mad night out Then go to Coco Bongo Nightclub, a show not to be missed !! The Captain Hook Pirate ship is another great night out, be prepared to party !

I have just returned from two weeks at the Riu Lupita, having spent Christmas at the hotel. What can I say? Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. To those people who moan about the food, I say you need to widen your taste. For breakfast, lunch and dinner there was a HUGE choice of food. Over the two weeks I was there, I was spoilt for choice. How anyone can complain about the food is beyond me. A special thanks has to go to the hotel for their Christmas Eve buffet. It was absolutely outstanding. I was like a child in a sweet shop as there were so many lovely things to eat, I didnt know where to start first! We had champagne, several ice sculptures around the pool area, the animation team were dressed in black tie and beautifully dressed tables. It was perfect. All the staff go out of their way to be friendly, often remembering what drink you like and start getting them ready when they see you approaching the bar! The animation team work extremely hard throughout the day, but they're never pushy. The bus to the beach has to be seen to be believed. Its the most rickety bus I've ever been on but you can set your watch by it when you pick it up from the hotel or the Beach Club. Beach Club is fabulous, again with entertainment throughout the day (if you want it), plenty of sunbeds and a swimming pool. One thing to note - after reading reviews on TA, I was under the impression we could use other Riu hotels and their facilities, however, on our arrival at the Lupita, it now appears they have stopped doing that (2 weeks before we arrived!!). Not a major problem, as we quite liked the small and friendly atmosphere of the Lupita - the other hotels seemed to be on the large side. We also used the facilities at the Spa - the aromatherapy and swedish massages were to die for and we floated out of there back to our room!! All in all we had a fantastic time in Mexico - the hotel, the food and the staff went a long way towards this and for this I thank them.
