We stayed 12-19 April and the weather was cloudy/cool/sunny/windy. Our s/c room was large with balcony facing pool. At night it was cold & we needed the blankets! A heater would have been welcome. Kitchenette large but lacking kettle & toaster (can be hired with deposit) & only one saucepan. We had 2 breakfasts (6 Euros) and 1 dinner (10 Euros) in restaurant - excellent. Room cleaned well and all staff friendly. Hotel very quiet & reception area empty - no shop but a good cheap supermarket is a few mins walk down the hill next to Rest. Sadi. The pool area is attractive but all 3 pools very cold & very few people ventured in - we didn't swim at all. None is heated. Lots of lizards in wall by pool and they squeak (yes, really!) Black-sand beach 15 mins walk away - no sun umbrellas tho' we did see sun loungers. Sea was cold & rough. Restaurants nearby OK - we liked El Rincon (only opened on our last day), La Bodeguita and La TascaVasca but not Avenida. Went to Santa Cruz 2 evenings - it's pretty but most places closed or empty. Found a restaurant with trio playing. Buses are confusing and not as frequent as rep made out - returning from Santa Cruz Sunday evening we had to wait 50 mins for a bus! Hired a car for 2 days & drove to far south (Volcan San Antonio etc - cold and windy!) and far north - distances not as bad as they appear on the map! On east side Tazacorte quite pretty but didn't like Puerto Naos. Were told 'if it's cloudy in Los Cancajos buzz off to Tazacorte', but you need a car & it takes 45 mins via a tunnel through the spine of the island. Took excursion to Roque de los Muchachos/Garafia/El Time/Caldera de Taburiente. Hundreds of hairpin bends - frightening in big coach. Spectacular tree-covered mountains and steep drops. Pretty villages and lots of flowers. Not an island for wildlife: the largest wild mammal is a rabbit! Road signs confusing when driving, e.g. Fuencaliente appears as Los Canarios! The generally poor weather we had was probably not typical and I gather it changed for the better after we left. Huge queues at La Palma airport when leaving as 2 Thomson flights leaving within 10 minutes of each other.

Stayed for one week in this pleasant and quiet resort. Enjoyed dining out in the local restaurants and found the hotel to be a good base for activities across the island using a hire car. The local beaches are not great, but the hotel pool and outdoor areas were excellent and not overcrowded . The rooms were basic but spacious. Both the rooms and public areas were clean. Breakfast was good and worth including, but we did not try dinners at the hotel. The kitchen area had basic cooking equipment, enough to make a simple meal such as pasta salad which could be enjoyed on the balcony with a bottle of wine and sea view. We very much enjoyed the stay and found la Palma to be great as a destination for an active break (hiking, visiting small Towns, etc) as well as plenty of poolside relaxation in the sun. La Palma seems to attract a nice mix of people, couples, families and small groups.
