Thasos is a beautiful place to stay with its fine restaurants, stunning views, beautiful beaches and friendly locals. However, our holiday was let down by the very poor standards of the Smaragdi Ii studios. Our family occupied three rooms and every one was dirty. The showers were sub standard in every room and basic amenities were broken or non existant, such as chipped crockery and no plugs for sinks. The toilets did not flush properly and the toilet paper bins were not emptied daily, being left for three days on one occasion. We had to ask for clean towels after three days and although they were brought, there was an air of reluctance. The pool had a scum mark all the way round and insects were not removed very often. Also, tiles around the pool were cracked and loose and great care was needed when walking around bare foot. At times the pool was very rowdy and extremely noisy, so if you fancy relaxing with a book-forget it! Thomson's staff and transfers were excellent, but considering this holiday cost us several thousand pounds and knowing Thomson's good reputation, we expected more. We have stayed at the Smaragdi on 4 previous occasions and have had no complaints whatsoever. The views from the studios are fantastic and well worth the walk up the steep hill to get to them. However, the standards have fell drastically and I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THAT ANYONE STAY HERE.
Thank you for your comments. We are sorry to hear the hotel appears not to meet our usual high standards. We will pass these comments back to our suppliers to make sure these issues have been rectified.
Thassos is a beautiful green island with great walks as well as beautiful beaches to satisfy those looking for a relaxing holiday. The resort of Golden Beach has just the right number of restaurants and bars to provide variety and choice without being too commercial. For those that don't want to spend too much money there are local butchers and bakeries etc. to satisfy those that may wish to eat in. The resort of Skala Potamia is only a 20 minute walk down the beach and has a greater number of bars and restaurants for those that want a change of scene. One usual aspect for a Greek Island is that the water is drinkable saving the lugging of bottled water! Highly recommended is the walks up to the in land villages of Potamia and Panagia - 5km to the latter from Golden Beach, a beautiful walk with great views and good coffee shops and bakeries when you get there - and you can easily get the local bus back. Don't be afraid to use the local bus it is cheap, approximately hourly, reliable and comfortable and the drivers speak English. Bus tickets can also be bought in advance from nearby supermarkets. The highlight of this holiday for us was Costas the owner of Smagardi Studios. He was a genuinely happy and helpful host - this wasn't lip service to customer service, it was a lovely person who wanted to ensure you enjoyed your stay. He is also a very intelligent, interesting man with whom you can have great conversations at the bar. The rooms are standard Greek apartments, with the added bonus of great views of the bay. The downside to this is that those with walking difficulties may find the short but steep hill up to the appartments challenging, but for us this was a welcome way to work off the local spinach pies! In terms of places to eat we found them all to be of a good standard, particular favourites for us were Playa Del O'ra (further down opposite the campsite) and Agriakala (not sure of the spelling but at the bottom of the hill to Smagardi). For the ubiquitous gyros pitta "Taka Taka Man" (also near the campsite) is the place to go. Finally the flight times from Manchester were very civilised and Kavala airport in September was very easy going. The ferry trip is 40 mins and a pleasant part of the journey. Thassos is a northerly Greek Island therefore in the last two weeks of the season (end Sept) the evenings were getting cool and there was some cloud (it is a mountainous island) but it was generally sunny and hot during the day.
This resort is one of my favourite places to be.It has many interesting paces to visit.the location is superb and the host is amazing,he is friendly, too kind for words, very helpful, honest, reliable and trustworthy and will do anything to ensure you have a great time.the rooms may be basic but are clean and all have amazing views of a wonderful bay. There are a number of good tavernas and bars all within walking distance.though the hill is steep the positives of Smaragdi outweighs the effort. The hill can be overcome.I have been to this location 10 times now and would be devastated if this place was no longer available, as would the many others who return year after year that we meet regularly. So please visit this location and test it for yourself! The island is beautiful and has much to offer,it is worth the effort to get out and about to see the mountain villages and to take in the amazing views wherever you go.The people are only too happy to share their island and are most helpful. At Smaragdi you will find the host to be one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet, who welcomes everyone sincerely and goes to great lengths to make sure that you have a most enjoyable holiday, nothing is too much trouble for him and he works very hard day after day to keep his guests happy and relaxed. The island has many places of both beauty and interest to see, with lots of ancient historical sights in and around the villages and in Thassos Town. The weather can usually be relied on to be great which is a real boost.Golden Beach places to eat include Vigli, set high overlooking the whole bay, wonderfully romantic. There is also Fedra,Green Seas and bars such as Cielo for daytime snacks and drinks from frappes to cocktails, open all day.The beach can get busy with people at certain times of the year but it never feels overcrowded, just lie back on your sunbed and take in the views out to sea or towards the mountain backdrop, fantastic.I've only just returned but would go back tomorrow,as it is I will just have to wait until next year!
Arrived back from Thasos, Golden Beach 28th June stayed at Smaragdi (Emerald) wonderful view of the bay from balcony. Apartments very nice, lovely hot showers everyday morning or evening whatever the weather, lovely secluded balcony with lots of flowers all around. Had to admit the climb up from the beach was a bit hard going sometimes but when you opened the door to the apartment and their was that beautiful view it made it worthwhile. Finekas restaurant excellent, good service, lovely food. Fedra lovely food, Vigili service very good but food was dissapointing, same with prai di aura (not sure if that is correct spelling), Pefkas nice food, good service and lovely setting. Excellent value for money, The ferry ride over to the Island was enjoyable as well made a nice change broke the journey up.
