Hotel Evelin was a little gem with wonderfully helpful staff who went that extra mile to make your stay enjoyable. My partner left her bag in a bar in town and Alexandria on reception insisted on immediately ringing the places we visited to locate it and ensure it was held for us to collect, sure enough it had been found and held for us, what honest people. The rooms had basic self catering equipment but we only used the tea making facility so the provision of only one very large pan was not a problem. The hotel food was good basic Greek dishes although we ate mostly in the restaurants of Pythagorion.
The hotel could do with a few more sunbeds and umbrellas around he pool area particularly at peak times.
The hotel was a little way out of town about a 25 minute walk and 15 minutes from the shingle beach. The transfer time is no more than 5 minutes from the airport but noise is not a problem as there are few flights a day.
Pythagorion town has a beautiful harbour surrounded by bars and restaurants we particularly liked the Apollonia restaurant although we never had a bad meal anywhere. The Thomas Bar was also very good they even set up the British Lions test match for us ,(the only bar in town to show it). Evenings were centered around the harbour we didn't actually see a nightclub although there may be one hidden away somewhere.
There are many archaeological sites around, the Eupalinus Tunnel and the Heraion at Ireon are worth a visit and the new Archaeological Museum in the town is a must. Car hire is cheap and driving easy so worthwhile to see the Island. Samos town was a bit of a disappointment as was Karlovassi, both are commercial ports. There is a nice beach at Kokkari and also Potami where the waterfalls are also worth a visit. There are some nice villages in the mountains Manoates and Platanos particularly.
The apartments were clean and adequately furnished, the sheets and towels changed twice a week and smelt lovely and fresh, the rooms and general areas were kept clean and shiny. All the staff were eager to help with any problem and query, nothing was too much trouble, Alex on reception excelled as did Anna, George and Elizabeth at the pool bar, food and drinks all good. We had a lovely stay made special by the people mentioned. The apartments are not where they are shown to be on the Thomson web site map and although the reviews say it was a 20 minute walk to town it takes longer to get down to the Harbour and is not a pleasant walk back along a busy road, we always came back in a taxi, probably not so bad if you are younger and fit but we were disappointed at the location on a main road and I really looked into this before I booked, don't be disappointed just aware. The airport although close is not a problem with so few flights coming and going you find yourself just looking to see which airline it is. The road is the only downside to our holiday and really we were a little further away from Pythagorian than we would have liked. The harbour and back street taverna's are a delight.
For - Hotel staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel was clean.
Against - 2km from the port - situated on a main road and traffic lights at the front - airport at the rear - hopeless for self catering - one hob + half hob - no counter space at all - no draining board or draining rack - no grill or oven or microwave - no table and chairs in the room - this should not be advertised as being self catering accommodation.
