So a review of the Benidorm Plaza a 4 star hotel !!
From the outside the hotel looks like a modern bright welcoming hotel however once inside that changes dramatically
The reception staff were curt and not particularly welcoming or enthusiastic
The rooms themselves are dated and fall way behind even the budget hotels like a travel lodge and others such like hotels basics as tea and coffee making facility are not included clean rooms but unfortunately still in the 1990 decor. The beds were comfy and the room did have air con the bath room was adequate but overall the room was very basic and small As for the food again for an alleged 4 star Thompson holiday it was totally lacking in imagination or variety I really do not wish to get started on desert mainly as there wasn't any unless you like yoghurt or ice cream oh and the rows and rows of fruit The waiters in the dining room are severely lacking in personality and also manners unless you are Spanish I personally found them rude and not typical of the resort may be they should try working in some of the bars we visited may help with there obvious poor attitude towards guests that did not speak Spanish however praise must be given to very young waiter I think called Gabriel who smiled when taking our order and was very polite
The one night we did attend the hotel entertainment every word spoken was in Spanish very much alienating the British customers
In truth the evening entertainment was of a very poor standard and was more suited to a holiday camp than an alleged 4 star hotel if you have watched Phoenix Nights then the backing group for Jerry st clare must have been copied from the group we had on offer "Alons"
Most other evenings the entertainment was either Flamenco dancing or more often than not a raffle as in most cases you do end up speaking to other holiday makers from the UlK all of whom also thought the evening entertainment was of a very poor standard. would very much like to know how the star rating is given to hotels as I say cleanliness wise not an issue but by today's standards this hotel falls well short of a 4 star rating in taking in to account the the industry standard
On my arrival I requested wifi and was given a weeks free usage very commendable but alas with most things in the hotel it also turned out to be a bit of a downfall I ended up using one of the bars on the beach front who also gave me free wifi certainly wouldn't pay for the second week an
We wanted a quick week in the sun after moving house, never been to Benidorm before chose benidorm plaza as location looked good .Although the french strike meant a late take off the flight was fine and the coach transfer was efficient and comfortable. Check in at the hotel was efficient and friendly. Room was great 12th floor corner great view .Food at this hotel is great and you will meet the delightful Roxanne who checks you into the dining room. There are good drink deals to be had up tp 6pm.Location is good short walk to bars and shops and the older part of town .Beaches are some of the best I have seen, but sun bed and umbrella hire is pricey at £12 a day. There are plenty of free sunbeds at the hotel both around the pool and on the raised terraces ,the one on the seventh floor gets the sun longest. We thought the entertainment was good and varied and Monika the host was a laugh particularly whilst leading the water aerobics .There were a few whingers who expect everything to be geared to the British who should not travel abroad for there hols. Tip for entertainment later in the evening try the Tower bar, we went to benidorm expecting little but had a great time
Luckily we only wanted a base for our 7 day holiday. We have been to Palm Wings in Turkey for the last 3 years which is supposed to be the same Thomson star rating as the Benidorm Plaza. How Thomson can rate plaza has 4 star is beyond my comprehension. Brochure said the hotel had recently been refurbished but for a four star rating it seemed very dated. The colour scheme was very drab and the soft furnishings and art work in the reception area were definitely not 4 star.
The food was edible but very basic and very little choice. You could find many of the dishes in a school canteen -stews, mash pizza chips, only Spanish dish was Paella once. The displays were very basic and there was no wow factor. Dessert choice very poor.
Bar area was dark and dismal . The bar staff were fairly slow and a little clumsy. Milk spilled down a Lady when pouring coffee at table. Cocktail shaker lid not on correctly fitted resulting in the bar man getting cover in Alexander cocktail.
You had to have you room key card to use the lift .
Entertainment was very poor unless you enjoyed listening to keyboards and vocalist singing old songs.
There were no quizzes, no bingo and no flamenco dancers which would have been far more entertaining than what was on.
I noticed that the Spanish guests seemed to get free bottles of water with dinner when other guests were charged 1.50 euro 500ml bottle.
Pool was enclosed. I expected the roof from the pictures but it was also had doors and windows around which lost the atmosphere of relaxing on the loungers by the pool.
The location of the hotel was ideal for the beach and old town.
Tapas alley was excellent to sample delicious tapas.
Would I return - no
Wished we'd returned to Palm Wings Turkey - now that's what I call 4 star.
Good hotel, Staff very good and most helpful.
