Having been to Potokaki (Pythagorio) eight times previously doing self catering we have just returned from staying at the Hydrele Hotel....the best holiday in Samos ever - in spite of the fact that I caught a bug on the 'plane which developed into bronchitis. All the staff were so friendly and helpful, the beach just 30seconds walk away. Breakfast and dinner were buffet style with an abundance of choice. Potokaki is 25 minutes walk into Pythagorio or ten minutes by bicycle. In the other direction the walk along the beach to the quiet very small town of Ireaon is glorious and takes about 40 minutes.
Two tavernas we could recommend in Pythagorio are the Four Seasons on the quayside and the Esperides off the main street, both family run.
In September/October the weather is still hot and much quieter than in high season. The airport runway is behind the hotel so there is some noise occasionally and the firefighting planes take off from there to put out fires on neighbouring islands - very exciting seeing them scoop water off the sea.
Turkey is accessible for Ephesus and good shopping, and Patmos - the Jerusalem of the Aegean - is 1 hour away and well worth a visit.
Can't wait to go again next year!
This is a nice hotel, but be warned... It is virtually on the end of the runway, and there is aircraft noise most day's, but not at night. The distance to pythagoreon is about 30 min's walk, with the taxi's charging anything from 4 to 6 euros. There are a couple of supermarkets close to the hotel and one taverna which serves good Italian and Greek food. Most of the tavernas in pythagoreon were ok for food, but we did have a bout of mild food poisoning from the taverna right at the end of the harbour. Overall I would recommend the hotel, but only if you don't mind walking/aircraft noise.
