This was our second stay at the Grand Hotel Flora, and we were not disappointed by it. Far from it - the staff were even more friendly and helpful, never off-hand or too busy to spare the time for us. The food, pool and general hotel cleanliness and ambience were also as good as we remembered. Sorrento is a great resort with great bars, cafes, restaurants and shops - we will be back!
Hotel excellent. Staff very helpful & friendly. Food excellent served in dining room looking over to the sea. Rooms good and very clean. Road outside very busy so if you like it quieter opt for sea view/pool view room. However rooms are UPVC double glazed windows & doors. Pool big large and spotlessly clean - probably the cleanest I have ever been in.
The Grand Hotel Flora is located on the main road into Sorrento about 15 mins walk to Piazzo Tasso opposite a petrol station. If you are unlucky enough to have a room on the front of the hotel, as long as the balcony door remains closed its fine as its a really busy road and very noisy. If you do venture onto the balcony and look above the petrol station there is a nice view. Rooms that overlook the pool also have sea views. Pool is nice though you have to pay 5 euros for a sunbed (deckchairs are free). Dining room is located on 5th floor with lovely views over the sea. Food is nice. Outside the hotel the resort of Sorrento is great but busy. Would recommend a day at the solarium at the Delfino restaurant at Marina Grande (6 euros per bed) but with access to the beautiful Mediterranean. The food there is pricey but well worth it especially the seaffod risotto. Another excellent place to eat is O Murzill, a small restuarant with 9 tables, located on Via Accademia. Of the Thomson excursions would recommend the Amalfi Drive select visiting Positano(stunning), Amalfi(not much to see but great for people watching when sat outside one of the cafes in the main piazza) and Ravello(if you like gardens a visit to Villa Rufalo is a must). Also try the Capri trip select where you are taken on a small boat to Capri, around Capri with stops for swimming and then about 2-3 hours on Capri. Avoid the cafes in the main square of Capri town which charge a fortune, there are plenty on the side streets that you get better service at. Overall would definately recommend Sorrento and will be returning at some time
We booked a side sea view room which was clean and comfortable but upgraded to a room with full sea and pool view (60e) which had two balconies - one on the side the other on the rear. This gave us a beautiful clear view of Vesuvius and the bay of Naples. We upgraded because the side balcony was quite breezy only catching the morning sun. The evening meals were good - 4 courses. However breakfasts not so good. They stopped providing cooked breakfasts after first morning until someone had a word with the rep. However there wasn't a great variety and the cereals were poor quality. It is quite a trek along to tasso much more than the 300m stated and as the flora is on a one-way street you cannot hop on a bus to take you there. We weren't impressed at being asked to pay extra ie 10e for the use of the fridge or for the use of a sunbed around the pool. Wi-Fi also charged by the hour. A bit disappointing for a 4 star hotel. The pool area is kept immaculately clean and the staff particularly the waiters were all very friendly and welcoming.
