As with a lot of places you visit, the first impression is always the one that counts. With the 4 Views, Monumental Hotel, that first impression didn't do a lot for us. The room that was allocated to us at first was also not very impressive, however a bit of negotiation found us in a very nice part of the hotel, with a very nice room. The hotel looked entirely different at night, when all the lights were on, the staff was very pleasant and all spoke very good English, even down to the cleaner on our floor. The hotel buffet style food was excellent for all meals, plenty of choice and quantity. We had two special occasions to celebrate and the staff were very good at making both those occasions a memorable experience. In house entertainment was very good on the whole, although the bar prices were a bit on the expensive side after 8'o.clock. We had to endure a Thomson's rep introduction on the second day, I say endure, as the person doing the presentation, in my opinion needs some intensive training on how to carry out her presentation, in a manner that is both informative and interesting. One hour of droning on without a break in an accent that was difficult to understand, was enough to put one to sleep. By taking her time and splitting things down into important issues, the hotel, trips, and interesting places to see, would I am sure have got the information across in far simpler terms. Watching your audiences body language is a good way of interpreting whether or not your presentation is working and hitting the spot where it is aimed at. I personally was ready to leave after half an hour of it, but only stayed to the end to save my wife any embarrassment. It's so important for a company representative to be on top of their job in an instance like this. I can only blame Thomson's for not making sure that their rep's are well trained in what they do. If a Thomson executive was to sit through one of these presentations I'm absolutely sure he or she would agree with my comments 100%. Summing up, our stay at the Four Views Monumental, was very nice. We met some nice people, the facilities were excellent, and the island of Madeira was charming. I hope this review will help to improve your venue, and that many more people will visit Madeira.

We enjoyed very much our honeymoon in Madeira, starting from the first - arrival - day. Hotel was nice and was in a good location, breakfast was varied and delicious. While we are not beach sleepers (there are no sand beaches in Madeira), every day we started with one of the many trails in Madeira - we were in Rabacal, Pico Ruivo, Ponta da Sao Lourenco. Since renting a car, we managed to get to know the north side of the island (Sao Vicente, Porto Moniz), Paul da Serra, in the south - Calheta, Ribeira Brava, Camacho, ect. We suggest to take part in the folklore dinner, which was interesting and fun, but ended too soon. Must do - have a swim in ocean, see Madeirian mountains and nature, taste Madeirian wine and bolo del mel (honey cake) and relax! We recommend to all those who enjoy active holidays and nature, go out and enjoy the beauty of Madeira!

The hotel was situated about 15 mins walk from the town centre, however it is quite a slog up some of the hills. The hotel itself was clean and comfortable however the food quality was variable between acceptable and poor with a lot of dishes repeated daily. The chefs are to be commended for being able to make a lot of the food bland and tasteless and not particularly hot. The daily room maid service was excellent and could not be faulted. We went on several island tours which were well conducted and interesting, travelling on comfortable coaches. The tours included a lunch in the price which was a little disappointing especially on the Eastern side of the island tour. A trip to Monte on the cable car is definitely recommended followed by a descent in a wicker toboggan.
