Book a flight to La Palma for a different side to the Canaries - one of lush pine forests and volcanic landscapes.
Tell people you’ve booked flights to La Palma and it’s quite likely they won’t know where you mean. That’s because this little Canary isn’t on many people’s radar. And that’s the great thing about it – you book a flight to La Palma if your buzzwords are ‘quiet’ and ‘authentic’. The capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma, is made up of colonial-style buildings and whitewashed houses. They give way to a photogenic mass of rolling hills, clad in fir trees and scented pines. It’s great if you’re a rambler or an outdoorsy type. Resorts tend to be low-level and laid-back, so don’t expect high-rises with an all-night party vibe.
La Palma Top 5
SPREAD your towel on one of the sandy stretches in Puerto Naos or Los Cancajos – they’re the island’s premier beach spots.
MOSEY round the sleepy inland towns and villages, where you’ll find little workshops and handicraft stalls selling embroidery, lace and pottery.
TRY ‘churros de pescado’. Fresh-from-the-sea fish is battered, shallow fried and served with a spritz of lemon.
SIP a glass of vino in Los Cancajos. It’s the liveliest resort on the island with a handful of bars to its name.
FOLLOW the trail up Roque de los Muchachos in La Caldera de Taburiente National Park. It’s La Palma’s highest peak, rising to nearly 8,000 feet. The views are really something.
