Book a flight to Tunisia and get ready to be spoilt for choice – when it comes to must-see sights, North Africa’s smallest country punches well above its weight.
Tunisia may be North Africa’s smallest country, but it packs in a lot of sights. Dougga’s Roman ruins are considered the best-preserved in this part of Africa. And over in El Djem, the 30,000-seater amphitheatre dates back to the 3rd century AD. But flights to Tunisia aren’t just about Roman architecture – there’s a treasure trove of relics left by the Phoenicians, Ottomans and French, too. And most of them are within a few hours’ drive of the coast. Talking of which, one of the best reasons to book a flight to Tunisia is its string of picture-perfect beaches - like Hammamet, Sousse and Monastir.
Tunisia Top 5
SOAK up the sun on Hammamet’s bleached-white shore. The stretch here is ten kilometres long, so you can bag your own sandy spot.
FLASH the cash in Sousse’s old town. Stalls line the streets, and on Sunday the action moves to the Souq el-Ahad.
TRY the local speciality, ‘brik’. These pastry pockets are folded around a lightly-cooked egg topped with anything from tuna to meat.
DANCE all night in Moncef Bay. With bars, pubs and clubs lining the main strip, this is Hammamet’s party hangout.
STEP back in time at El Djem, 60 kilometres south of Sousse. This huge Roman amphitheatre was built in the 3rd century AD.
