Top Places to Party in Portugal and Malta
If you fancy a bit of high life with your night life, Portugal’s chic capital has plenty of A-list treats up its sleeve. Here, sipping cocktails and dressing to impress is practically a way of life. So order a Mojito, put on your best pout and glam it up with some of the world’s most beautiful people.
And if you’re in the mood to party until the small hours, Malta may just surprise you. Forget any preconceptions you’ve got about this place – these days it’s a clubber’s dream.
If you want to party, Lisbon's where it's at. The city's nightlife centres on Bairro Alto, where the pinched streets are packed with people bursting out of bars and some of the best restaurants around. If you want to muscle in on Lisbon's hipster crowd, point your loafers in the direction of Sétimo Céu. With minimalist décor, frantic Latin sounds and a too-cool-for-school clientele, 'The Seventh Heaven' is a mixed bag of straight, gay and not-quite-sure clubbers. The owners are Brazillian, so expect plenty of strong, sugary Caiparinhas with your glittery house music.
Sticking with the trendy set, the Alcantara district's a hip quarter with old storehouses converted into hip bars, chic restaurants and seriously cool clubs. And if you want to dance with tradition, Lisbon café society is particularly rousing, with its vibrant Latin American and African music - a reminder of Portugal's past. Linger over a small, black bica coffee as you listen to soul-stirring fado music or salsa and samba the night away.
Over the past few years Malta has become a bit of a hotspot for clubbers. St Julians and Paceville have a strong scene with plenty of superstar DJs manning the Technics. It wouldn't be uncommon to hear the latin-tinged house of Masters at Work alongside Malta's hottest mixer, DJ Ruby, who's a resident at Tattingers in Rabat. The clubs are open seven days a week and not just in summertime.
Regardless of season, you can party until the early hours in loads of different spots. And if you're worried about the scorching temperatures inside and out - don't panic. Clubs like Gianpula have thrown out pesky air-conditioning and ripped off the roof for open-air summer bashes. If you prefer the clink of a cocktail glass to the thump of a beat, there are plenty of bars to relax in. Portomaso's home to a few swanky hot spots, with the swish Portovino usually crammed with punters dressed to impress. Or check out the Pioneer Road in Bugibba, which is bursting with energy. During the summer season, drinkers get together on the promenade, turning it into one big party.
