Foot and Mouth Disease - Taking food products abroad

Following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease, it is now illegal to take some meat and dairy products abroad. From 7th August it will be illegal to take meat, meat products, milk and dairy products abroad from animals that are susceptible to foot and mouth disease, including cattle, pigs, goat, sheep and deer. This ban includes sandwiches, packed lunches and food for self-catering holidays. It also includes fresh, chilled, frozen, tinned, preserved and processed products. Foot and mouth disease presents no risk to humans but does pose a serious threat to animal health. It can be spread to susceptible animals through a variety of food products. It is therefore important that you DO NOT take food products abroad. To find out more, please visit the Defra website (www.defra.gov.uk) or call 08459 33 55 77.

I am travelling to the United States of America (USA). Are there any particular security measures I should be aware of?

All passengers travelling to the USA should be aware of the following information, and subsequent changes to check-in procedures at UK airports. Please note that travel advice for the USA will be printed on your Thomson flight documentation, so please take time to read this information and to follow any instructions.

Important information:

  • Please allow additional time for the check-in process, to enable us to ensure that all flights leave on time.
  • During the check-in process, customers will be asked to confirm their country of residence, plus the address of their first night's accommodation in the USA, including zip code. Once you have declared this information, it will be printed on a slip of paper which you must keep with you during the flight. If you have booked accommodation with Thomson, we will provide the full address of your property. If you have booked a Flight-Only, Fly-Drive, Late Deal or Pricebreaker holiday, your address we supply will be that of our Thomson resort office.
  • Once on-board, you must complete a Visa Waiver form. It is imperative now that the accommodation address exactly matches that provided on the slip of paper at check-in, including the zip code. This is important to ensure you gain successful entry into the USA.
  • If you require any further information, please visit the ABTA website.
