Guide to Daytona Beach

'A world away from the glitter of Orlando, Daytona Beach is so laid-back it'll leave you almost horizontal'

If you're looking for somewhere you can kick back, chill out and soak up the Florida sunshine, then put the brakes on in Daytona. Sitting along the dramatic Atlantic coastline, its sweeping 38 kilometre stretch of snow-white sand has earned it the reputation as one of the most famous beaches in the world. It'll certainly have beach lovers grinning from ear to ear. You'll find plenty of facilities here, so if you've come to simply sit and do nothing more strenuous than apply the odd squirt of sun cream – grab a sun lounger, lie back and unwind away. The sparkling seas are a big draw here and there are more watersports than you can shake a surfboard at. Whether it's parasailing, jet skiing, scuba diving or surfing that gets your adrenaline going, this is where it's at. Perhaps an even bigger attraction here is the fact that you can actually drive onto the beach or hire a quad bike to explore these glittering shores. Away from the sands, the Oceanside Boardwalk has heaps of bars, restaurants and amusements. Browse the boutiques, which are crammed full of beach gear and kitsch souvenirs, or sit at a chic bar with a cocktail to hand as you look out over the waves. Visitors don't tend to roll up here for much sightseeing, but one thing that certainly put the town on the map is the Daytona International Speedway, home of the Great American Race - the Daytona 500. Don't miss a tour around this enormous 480-acre sports complex, which is known as the World Centre of Racing. Real fans of the sport should also head for Daytona Beach's Klassix Auto Attraction, a museum that features some impressive vintage motorcycles and cars.
