The thrills and spills of Disney World and Universal Studios are in touching distance with holidays to Clermont, Davenport and Haines City. And when you need R&R, these small towns serve up laid-back outdoor living.
They’re only a short drive from Walt Disney World, but Clermont, Davenport and Haines City could be a million miles away. All 3 are small, residential towns with enough hotels, shopping malls, restaurants and golf courses for each day of the week. Plus, they make great jumping-off points for hiking and water-based adventures in the state parks and lakes in the region.
Walt Disney World is the first port of call for any visitor to Florida. The Magic Kingdom kicks things off with Mickey and Minnie parades, Cinderella Castle, and world-famous rides like Space Mountain. And, with the Epcot Centre, Animal Kingdom Park and Hollywood Studios to explore the following day, and the day after that, it’s like a fairytale that has no end.
Away from the Disney highs, the towns offer plenty of open-air spaces and low-key attractions for winding down. A stay at Clermont puts you within reach of the world-famous Lakeridge Winery, and you’re just a few kilometres from a chain of lakes where there’s canoeing, walking trails, and horse riding. Families at Davenport can usually be found in the park around Lake Play. The area around Haines City, meanwhile, has a whopping 16 lakes with swimming, fishing and boating on the cards.
Golf is big business in this neck of the woods, with all 3 towns claiming a bevy of courses. And wherever you’re staying, you’re never more than 40 minutes’ drive from the Greg Norman-designed Championsgate and Reunion’s trio of signature courses. In around half an hour by car, too, you can be banging on the gates of Florida’s other big theme parks – Universal Studios, SeaWorld and Legoland.

Stayed at a SIlver villa, July/august 2010. Accommodation was excellent, we had a four bedroom villa and there was plenty of room for our family of five. The villa was very clean and tidy as was the swimming pool. We found universal to be our favourite... more on this review
