“This tropical retreat has stylish interiors and five à la carte restaurants – not to mention the largest pool in Central America.”
This super-sized resort is surprisingly well-hidden in the lush forest of Playa Conchal. Low-rise buildings and thatched-roof cabanas are dotted throughout a blanket of green. Step inside, meanwhile, and you’ll find style-led interiors – think plush sofas, neutral colour palettes and loads of natural light.
As for your own private retreat, it’s equally stylish. Dark polished wood stands out against marble floors and pale walls. Soft furnishings in rich orange and gold add splashes of colour. And all the rooms come with plasma TVs, coffee makers and a living room space to chill out in. If you like, you can upgrade to the Royal Service for a private butler and a pillow menu.
One of the best things about this hotel is its range of facilities. The lagoon-like main pool is so big it could easily be mistaken for a lake – it winds around the resort, with little islands of palm trees and seating areas dotted within it. Pool aside, you can get creative at one of the classes on offer – there’s everything from cookery courses and wine tasting, to painting and dance lessons. Or, if you fancy some R&R, the Ahuia Spa has a great range of treatments, including its signature volcanic stone therapy. As if all that wasn’t enough, there’s also an 18-hole golf course where you can perfect your par.
If you prefer the beach, meanwhile, it’s only a short walk to the curve of soft sand belonging to the hotel. Here you can try watersports like snorkelling and kayaking.
On the dining front, the resort has an impressive collection of five à la carte restaurants, plus two buffet-style, serving dishes from around the globe. Eat al fresco at Faisanela, an Italian trattoria in tropical surroundings, or head to Hoyo 19 for a barbecue and great views over the golf course. Elsewhere, the Gabi Club is a stylish affair. Mahogany tables and chairs circle a central pillar, while a high-domed ceiling and arty lighting round things off.

Your guide to
Playa Conchal, Costa Rica
“Pinky-white sands, turquoise seas and a hideaway vibe - no wonder Playa Conchal is often dubbed Costa Rica’s best beach.”
Most guidebooks agree that Playa Conchal is the most beautiful beach in
Costa Rica. And it’s easy to see why. A two-mile curve of sand tucked into the northern Pacific coast, it’s textbook tropical. Calm turquoise waters wash the shores, and trees fringe the bay before rolling up onto the headlands. It’s also pretty peaceful as there’s only one hotel cocooned in the forests here. So if you want to leave the world to its own devices for a while, it’s ideal. The first thing you’ll notice, though, are the sands. They’ve got a really exotic pinky tinge. It’s because they’re made from zillions of crushed ‘conchas’, which means shells - hence the name Playa Conchal. And because their particles are super-tiny, the waters here are really clear and great for snorkelling. Venture in and you’ll see everything from rainbow-bright fish to silky rays. Other watersports here include kayaks and catamarans. Away from the beach, there’s very little else in the immediate surroundings - apart from the Garra de Leon golf course, that is. Bordered by forest, this championship course is all emerald green fairways. And you can play to the screeches of monkeys in the woods. For shops and restaurants, head into Brasilito, a lively little town about ten minutes’ walk away. But whatever you do, set aside some time for the Great Outdoors. Take a horseback ride through the hills or try a sports fishing trip. Or head for the nearby national parks. Home to mountainous rainforests, waterfalls and wildlife-filled walking trails, they’re paradise for nature-lovers and explorers.
