Holidays in Waikkal have something of that classic hideaway feel about them. Much quieter than neighbouring Negombo, this rambling resort has a scattering of hotels that are pretty much self contained, with few independent restaurants and bars. So, if you do step out it will be to enjoy the night air, rather than a night on the town. That being said, most hotels have regular entertainment, so you won't have to rely on a good book or your i-pod to while away the evening.
Accommodation here mainly centres around a few top quality hotels. So, if you're looking for bargain holidays to Waikkal, you might have to think again. However, the properties do offer plenty of comforts and facilities, including all inclusive holidays. So your budget will tend to go that little bit further. Take Thomson's featured hotel, the Club Hotel Dolphin, for example. You can play tennis, squash, volleyball, water polo, table tennis or have a work out in the fitness centre, all in the price. Plus there's a superb restaurant and two pool bars for a cocktail or two in between dips.
With the resort being known for its laid back atmosphere, people don't travel to Waikkal for the nightlife or sightseeing. However, there is a fish market where you can immerse yourself in some colourful culture. And a few miles north is Mahaweha, where you can find out all about Sri Lanka's time-honoured craft of batik making. Otherwise, just chill out and enjoy the sun.
