Guide to Waikkal

'Waikkal is quintessential Sri Lanka – an intimate little place where the rolling tide, nodding palms and village life flow undisturbed just as they did centuries ago.'

Smaller and quieter than neighbouring Negombo, Waikkal has hideaway written all over it. In fact it's not really a resort at all – more a necklace of little hamlets and hotels along a stretch of golden, palm-fringed sands. Life here remains firmly focused on The Beach and hotel pools where it's unbelievably easy to while away the days in blissful, semi-slumbering fashion. But if the urge grabs you, there's also a surprising amount to see and do. Along the main drag there are loads of friendly, makeshift stalls selling snacks, exotic handicrafts and even tailoring services. When your appetite gets the better of you, a good choice of eating spots awaits. From smart hotel restaurants to bright little pitstops serving delicious local curries which taste even better when partnered with an ice-cold lager or the locally favoured ginger beer. Top your must-see list with Waikkal's fish market. Rise at dawn to witness this crowded tangle of stalls where locals haggle loudly over the day's catch under a shade-giving banyan tree. While you're out and about, peep inside a local tile factory to see nimble-fingered craftsmen producing stacks of rough and ready clay roof tiles. Round off your sightseeing in Mahawewa to the north. Here, you can see the island's colourful batiks – a craft brought here by the Dutch – being made in tiny, palm-thatched factories. It's a snapshot of hidden, everyday Sri Lanka that will linger long after your holiday ends.

Eating out

For a real taste of Sri Lanka, try a local dish called a 'hopper'. This is a bowl-shaped pancake that is carefully fried over a high flame and is often served with an egg or with honey and yoghurt. Locals normally eat hoppers for breakfast or as an early evening snack. There are a couple of pleasant restaurants near the lagoon, or alternatively, taste the treats your hotel has to offer.

Nightlife

Due to the size of this resort, evening entertainment mainly occurs in the hotels. You'll be treated to a variety of performances, ranging from live music to traditional dance.

Shopping

The shops in Waikkal can mainly be found in the hotels, although there are several terracotta-tile factories, which are used for many of the local buildings. There's a wonderful market in nearby Kochchikade every Sunday - the pungent scent of spices will follow you from stall to stall as you haggle for porcelain figures, local handicrafts and leather goods.

Local information

The working fishing town of Negombo is just 8km south of Waikkal and is well worth a visit. One of the most popular tourist pastimes is watching the fishermen sail in with their abundant catch of the day, which you can later try at one of the local restaurants.
