Vilamendhoo is a wonderful place to enjoy the beauty and magic of the Maldives!
My friend and I stayed at Vilamendhoo on 17-20 December 2016. We were traveling to Sri Lanka for the holidays and we wanted to do a side-trip to the Maldives since itâs a 60-minute flight from Colombo. My friend and I are from the States and we don't know many people who have been to the Maldives because it's quite far. So we didn't have referrals, recommendations or guidance from a travel agency or friends; we had to do the research on our own. We did a ton of research on Maldives resorts as we wanted to find the best resort at our preferred price point. We were drawn to Vilamendhoo because we read that it had an excellent house reef and it was a resort at our preferred price point. We went to TripAdvisor to see what guests thought of their experiences. Lots of repeat guests and reviewers who said they did a lot of research before visiting Vilamendhoo and were very pleased with their visit. What made us choose Vilamendhoo were these excellent reviews on TripAdvisor. We trusted people's opinions when they said they've been to other Maldives resorts at the same price point and they preferred Vilamendhoo. Seeing the excellent reviews from repeat and first-time guests alike also made us feel confident in our selection. The MLE arrival process was smooth and efficient. We found the Crown & Champa Resorts booth right away. The companyâs process to receive guests is efficient. They tagged our luggage, took us to a waiting van, drove us to the Trans-Maldivian Airlines terminal and relaxed in the companyâs waiting room before boarding our seaplane. Friendly and efficient process. The entire transfer/arrival processâfrom clearing immigration to arriving at our beach villaâwas smooth and efficient. A perfect start to our trip! Since I was traveling with a friend, we didn't want to be on an adults-only island where it's all honeymooning couples. Vilamendhoo had a nice range of guests. Honeymooning couples, older couples, families and a few small diving groups. Most people were there to relax and unwind from the real world. Guests were friendly on the excursions and while out and about. No rowdiness or loud groups. Being the week before Christmas, I thought the resort would be way more crowded. Perhaps it was crowded but you couldn't really tell because the island is quite large! We stayed in a beach villa (number 160-something). Quiet, clean room with good AC. We liked the outdoor bathroom. There were ants but hey, youâre outside. My friend and I did the full-board package, which was the right option for us. My friend and I arenât big drinkers and we decided we didn't need the amenities of the all-inclusive package. We were fine with purchasing our beverages and other items a la carte. Food was good and filling. My friend and I were amazed at the variety at each meal. There was something for everyone and we left each meal feeling full and satisfied. Be sure to sign up for the excursions! My friend and I did the sunset cruise, whale shark excursion and the manta & turtle excursion. Vilamendhoo has an outstanding excursion staff. Very friendly, social and made an excellent effort to show us the wildlife. We were very fortunate to see dolphins on the sunset cruise (not guaranteed), whale sharks on the whale shark excursion and mantas and turtles on the manta & turtle excursion. We appreciated the friendliness and efficiency of the staff members. The employees seem proud to be part of the Vilamendhoo and Crown & Champa Resorts family. They appear to be treated well by management and that is reflected in their excellent service and positive interactions with guests. I also noticed that employees wore pins declaring their years of service. One night I went out to the shore to look at the stars. I've never seen anything like it! So many stars on a clear night. We went to bed early each night because we were exhausted but I recommend going outside to look at the stars if you can muster the energy! It was magical and a moment I'll never forget. My friend and I live in a large city so we see very few stars at night. We asked for an earlier departure flight for our seaplane transfer back to MLE so we could have time to explore Male for a few hours before returning to MLE for our outbound flight. The people at the reception building were helpful and took care of our request. I'm not sure if this is something they're always able to accommodate; Iâm sure it depends on the Trans-Maldivian arrivals and departures scheduled for that day, but I'm glad both parties were able to accommodate our request. My only critical (but minor) comment for the resort management: I didn't like the look of plastic beach loungers on the beach; they look cheap. I think the wooden beach loungers look much nicer. Wooden loungers--like those at the pools--are aesthetically pleasing. Tip for guests: Be sure to check the price-per-night when you're booking your stay. We stayed three nights; nights 1 and 2 were $379/night and night 3 was $498/night. There are several pricing tiers throughout the year and one of our nights fell during "peak season" so we had to pay a much higher amount (more than $100 more) for that third night. Keep up the great work and high standards, Vilamendhoo. The rave reviews on TripAdvisor drew us in and they will bring us back!More
We stayed at Vilamendhoo for the first 2 weeks of March. On arrival at Male airport we were met by a Hayes and Jarvis rep, who took us over to the seaplane check in desk. We had a couple of hours to wait for the flight (possibly because our flight from Gatwick had been delayed), but Vilamendhoo has its own air conditioned lounge with soft drinks and food provided so it wasn't a problem. The 25 minute seaplane transfer was great, as we had some wonderful views of other islands. On arrival on the island we were given a drink and then shown to our room, with restaurant, pool and bars being pointed out along the way. We had booked a water villa which was great. We loved the peace and privacy we got there. Our room boy Manikfaan did an excellent job. As well as the daily cleaning service, the mini bar was restocked and there was an evening turn down service. Everything was very clean and towels, bedding etc.were in pristine condition. My only real gripe with the room was that the surfaces of the desk, coffee table and bedside cabinets were very sticky and marked. This was no fault of the room boy, but it looked like they needed revarnishing & I would have expected better. Snorkelling was fantastic and we were out there at least twice a day. Unfortunately most of the coral was badly bleached, although there were patches of colour so hopefully that's a sign of it recovering. There were loads of different fish we haven't seen before, as well as many larger versions of ones we've seen in Egypt. The sea was lovely and warm. There were strong currents at times, but as long as you are sensible and know your limits it shouldn't be a problem. We went on the Oceans Discovery trip and had a great day out with good food on the lovely boat, but found the snorkelling disappointing. The rest of the time we found plenty to do snorkelling on the house reef so didn't feel the need to look elsewhere. We ate all meals in the adult only restaurant. It was nice and relaxed. Food was very good, everything seemed to be made with quality ingredients and we always found something we liked. There was a show cooking station which we got some excellent stir fries from. Desserts were lovely but did nothing for our waistlines! We didn't sit in the side of the restaurant with an allocated table but were happy to sit the other side, and were very well looked after by Habib ( who taught us a lot about the island) and Jameel ( who was very knowledgeable about the snorkelling ). I had to visit the doctor as had an allergic reaction to something - he was very good and explained how to use the medication he prescribed. Our rep was in regular contact making sure I was OK. All in all we had a fantastic experience at Vilamendhoo. We chose it because of the good reviews and the accessible house reef and think we made the right choice. The staff are a real credit to the resort - everyone always had a smile and hello when we saw them Would we go again? Yes - in a heartbeat!More
Paradise Half A World Away
For Americans, the Maldives represent a commitment to extensive travel (approximately 20 flight hours)--a trip that is literally halfway around the globe, but we found much value in that commitment. My lovely bride has had one travel wish since our marriage: to stay in an over-the-water bungalow. She searched far and wide to find a place to her liking, and she found it in Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa. For about $900 USD per person, Emirates provides roundtrip airfare to the area. My overall impression of Vilamendhoo is that it is similar to other top tropical luxury resorts (such as those in the Caribbean Sea/Gulf of Mexico) except that its âupwardly mobileâ clientele are very diverse. Generally, visitors appear to come from two general regions: Europe or China. This diversity provides a unique multi-cultural environment rarely experienced any where else. We arrived at the Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa after an eleven day adventure on the Indian subcontinent, so our three-day stay on the island served as sort of well deserved âdecompressionâ from the exposure to a more primitive India. After flying into Malé (the capital city of the Republic of the Maldives), we were transferred to Vilamendhoo Resort by a 30-minute seaplane flight. The Vilamendhoo boasts everything a luxury tropical resort would ever need. I doubt we could have asked for more. Our all-inclusive package included our âhouse on stiltsâ accommodations, three gourmet meals per day, and all the beer (Lion and Carlsberg) and wine we could handle. For the go-getters, the island offers kayaking, wind-surfing, tennis courts, a football/soccer field, scuba diving, fishing charters, even a âwork out roomâ complete with treadmills and other machines (sorry, no golf course). All of the sports equipment can be rented. Of course, this is also the perfect spot to just rest and relax. The beaches are beautiful white sands, and the water is crystal clear and team with fish as well as juvenile reef sharks (non-aggressive). For you exhibitionists, nude sun-bathing on the island is strictly prohibited, so youâll have to keep your clothes on. Still, there is plenty of opportunity to catch some rays. There is also a day spa which provides a full range of services and treatments. There are three restaurants on the island that serve buffet style for every meal. The menu changes daily and can accommodate tastes from every region of the world. The native wait staff provides impeccable service, and they speak English rather well. Lastly, our accommodations were simply fantastic. The view alone from the back deck of our villa was amazing. We could watch the sea life as well as the sunset as we lounged sipping wine, beer, or soft drinks from our own bar. The rooms are air conditioned, but we found it just as pleasant to open the villaâs French doors and allow the sea breeze to flow through the house. It was the closest thing to living in paradise.More
What a holiday, what a marvellous location!
Strap yourself in, this may be a long review. Arriving via Abu Dhabi, the only negative of our holiday was we waited for our seaplane transfer from 2:40pm until 5:15pm, arriving at Vilamendhoo as it went dusk, but met by the welcoming drums. It certainly is different arriving next to a platform in the middle of the sea before transferring to a boat. Anyway, a painless and efficient welcome and we were soon in our Beach Villa, (No 171) which is on the south side of the island, complete with sun beds with our number on then and literally ten paces from the door to the sea. Meals were brilliant, plenty of choice and always hot, the sweets were to die for! Just don't count the calories! We were all inclusive, so wine, beer and cocktails were all included. Only branded spirits were chargeable. We ate in the same restaurant each day, except for a treat one night at the Asian Wok. The food here on the a la carte menu was superb. The snorkelling was amazing, both my wife and I snorkelling three times a day on the reef and past it into deeper water. We hired the free buoyancy vests for the whole stay, giving us that extra confidence in the water. The colours of the fish were unbelievable, with black tip reef sharks coming right up to the shoreline. Every Sunday, the Guests play the Staff in a football match on the pitch. Happy to say that we won 9-8, myself playing in goal for the two halves of thirty minutes each in very hot conditions. The people are really friendly, and there are some very talented footballers amongst the staff. One of the highlights of our trip was accepting the free two night/three day trip on the Gomafulho boat, a masted ship. It has five double rooms on board each with its own ensuite facilities. They offer this if they have a need for rooms at busy periods. If you get the chance to go on this - DONT HESITATE, book it, it is very popular and fills up quickly. The crew are like your friends, and the company with the other fours couples was a highlight of our trip. Barbara and Jessica from Chicago, Stefan and Suzi from Germany, Nike and Julie from Russia, and Eve and Danny from Lincoln. The snorkelling was out of this world. We swam with a Whale Shark, Manta Rays, large Reef Sharks, turtles and the usual variety of bright coloured fish. We even saw a couple of sperm whales on the final day as well as dolphins swimming alongside our boat, some pirouetting in the air. We visited another island (Dhangethi) and were shown around by one of the crew, and later that night enjoyed a barbecue on the beach on the same island. Fantastic meal prepared by the on board chef. Back on board the drinks (again all inclusive) flowed well into the night. It was with sadness that we left Vilamendhoo on Thursday afternoon but it really was the holiday of a lifetime. If you have booked, you won't regret it, if you are thinking of booking, do it! We made so many friends amongst other holidaymakers and the crew, but it never appears crowded, and you have private time a plenty. The staff made sure that the villa was kept clean and tidy twice a day, including a turn down of a night.More
