The Vilamendhoo experience starts before you even set foot on the island, with a seaplane transfer from the airport. Flying over turquoise waters and pearl-white isles sets the scene for what's to come. And from the sky you can really appreciate just how pretty the island is.

The resort itself has been completely refurbished so everything feels box-fresh. The makeover comes courtesy of the owners of sister island, Meeru, and you can expect the same level of pared-back luxury throughout.

Take the Beach Villas, for starters. They're set in tropical gardens, so you get a real sense of privacy. For that added luxe touch, opt for a Jacuzzi™ Beach Villa. Or, if al fresco living is your thing, stay in one of the brand-new Jacuzzi™ Water Villas over on the sunset side of the island. They're perched on stilts in the lagoon and come with open-air rain showers, outdoor whirlpool baths and steps leading straight into the water.

The open-air theme carries through to the resort's two main restaurants. They're both buffet-style and housed in open-sided cabanas. What's more, this place is 24-hour All Inclusive so everything's taken care of. You'll find more menu options over at the à la carte eateries. Star billing goes to the over-the-water Asian Wok Restaurant, which serves up sizzling teppanyaki. Plus, a choice of three bars means you've got plenty of after-dinner options.

As for what else is on offer, you can be as laidback or lively as you like. There's an over-the-water spa and a house reef that offers some of the best scuba diving and snorkelling in the Maldives. Plus, you get taster lessons in things like snorkelling and windsurfing - and a sunset cruise - included in your stay.

Your guide to South Ari Atoll, Maldives

“The Maldives. Even the name has become synonymous with paradise – and the South Ari Atoll is no exception.”

Set in the middle of the Indian Ocean, this pearl-like thread of tropical islands is picture-book perfect. We’re talking pure white sand and palm-fringed shorelines. And because the islands are surrounded by turquoise lagoons, the fabulous scenery isn’t just restricted to dry land. Reefs teeming with aquatic eye-candy and exotic corals halo each one. Plus, the waters are bath-warm and as clear as Bombay Sapphire - perfect conditions to take in the underwater theatrics. Of the 12,000 islands in the South Atoll, around one in ten of them are inhabited and less than half of them have any tourist development. Plus, of those that do, there’s usually room for just one hotel. In fact, Malé, the capital, occupies one island and its airport another! Because of this, the resort islands become worlds in themselves. And while some of the larger ones serve up several restaurants, state-of-the-art spas and a fantastic selection of watersports, life here is still all about stripped down simplicity. Bright blue skies, year round sunshine and natural good looks are the three main ingredients. On the entertainment front, things are pretty low-key, but that’s all part of the charm. You’ll find the closest thing to a sightseeing trip is a leisurely ride in a dhoni to find the perfect picnic spot. The after-dark scene, meanwhile, is pretty hotel-centric. Think laidback live music, cabaret shows and open-air beach bars.
