Hindus, Christians and Muslims. Coconut groves, beaches and rainforests. No matter which way you look at it, the state of Kerala is one seriously diverse place. And nowhere is this better summed up than in its cosmopolitan city of Kochi. Surrounded by palm groves, fields and lakes, Kochi is actually made up of numerous narrow islands and peninsulas, all based around a saltwater lagoon in the Arabian Sea. On the mainland of Ernakulam, you’ve got big shopping malls and swanky apartment blocks. While across in Mattancherry and Fort Kochi, it’s about an old world charm where the Portuguese, Dutch and English have all helped shape the area.
