Tucked between Chorao Island and Old Goa, Divar Island is about as delightful as they come. Separated from the mainland by the forked waters of the Mandovi River, this glittering isle can only be reached by ferry, and boy, is it worth the crossing. You'll think you've stepped into a picture postcard as the gorgeous Goan countryside rises up to greet you. Time seems to have stood still here, and as you make your way across the isle, you'll pass pretty paddy fields, sun-dappled forests and traditional villages. It's perfect terrain for jumping on a bike or setting off on foot to explore up close and personal. Pretty Piedade is the island's largest town, though even here, you'll find the pace of life charmingly sleepy. Clustered at the foot of a pine-clad valley, stroll along its quaint streets which are laced with elegant, colourful Portuguese-style villas and pop your head into the quaint selection of shops where you can pick up locally-made handicrafts. You'll also find some cracking little eateries serving up traditional dishes that'll make your mouth water. You won't see any monuments or tourist spots, but that's why those in know come here. For a spot of sightseeing though, drop into the Church of our Lady of Compassion and don't miss the views from the church square, they really are something to write home about. The wildlife here is something to shout about too. You can spot black-shouldered kites, greater spotted eagles, green bee-eaters and pallid harriers and, along the coast, flying fox bats and jackals. Hop across to Chorao Island and you'll find the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, teeming with local and migratory birds. So, if you want to go completely off the tourist trail, you heard it here first - unspoilt Divar Island is the place to head.
