Marmaris has brash and bold bits, but on closer inspection, you'll see beyond the touristy tack. Boutiques line the end of the promenade. The bazaar bustles with Turkish treasures. Pick up an almost-Gucci bargain at the vast Thursday market. Uzan Yali beach is conveniently close, but take a boat trip to Turtle Bay for something more elusive. Catamarans and scuba diving, ancient remains and Rhodes – so much to do, so little time.

Evenings in Marmaris? Think strolling through twisting streets in the older Kaleici district, followed by an open air concert at the amphitheatre. There's about a thousand restaurants to choose from, but the higher class of cuisine is around the Marina. If blaring beats aren't for you, avoid the promenade and slip off to an intimate jazz club or cocktail bar – wherever you go, things keep swingin' til 4am.
