Situated on the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey, Kas is nestled beneath the foothills of the impressive Taurus Mountains. It was originally a picturesque fishing village but has since grown into an upmarket resort, its main attraction being its unspoilt nature, but still with a lovely harbour and an authenticity of its own. There are pebble and sandy beaches within easy travelling distance, and ancient tombs and an amphitheatre to explore. The restaurants serve both Turkish and international food and can be found amongst the many small shops where you can lose your inhibitions and barter to your hearts content.
Filled with narrow cobbled streets, tombs dotted throughout the town, a 1st century BC amphitheatre, platforms above the sea for relaxing, art galleries and a mariner, Kas can truly be said to have something for everyone. If you would like to see a totally different world then try diving. Kas has an excellent diving centre for beginners and more experienced divers. Be amazed at the shoals of large fish together with multicoloured smaller species that you can admire amongst the reefs. When leaving Kas by boat with the sea behind you, look up at the mountains to see the figure of a man lying on his Side screaming.

In Kas you can sunbathe on the specially built wooden platforms that overlook the sea or alternatively you can take a drive to the nearest pebble beach which is just 10 minutes away. Backed by mountains the view across the water is of many small, uninhabited islands. For a change try the beautiful white shingle beach at Kaputas, situated at the bottom of a steep cliff, with its turquoise water and good views of the Kas Peninsular – it's 14km west of Kas and 25 minutes by dolmus. If you want to venture further afield another 30-minute drive will take you to Patara, which has the biggest and best beach in the entire Mediterranean. Other sandy beaches can be reached travelling from Kas Harbour by water taxi – about 10 to 15 minutes ride away.
The number of lively cafes, bars and restaurants ensures that there is plenty of selection. The evening meal begins with the 'meze' - almost a meal in itself. Stuffed aubergines and vine leaves are everywhere and there is a huge variety of fish and seafood. You will also find more types of kebab than you ever imagined. Try the excellent local wine, the refreshing lager Efes, or the national tipple, raki. The sweet pastries are sticky and utterly delicious - and should be followed by a cup of thick sweet Turkish coffee and some of the world famous Turkish delight
The nightlife is not as lively as in the larger towns of Marmaris or Alanya - evenings usually consist of leisurely strolls whilst gazing at the beautifully illuminated cliff-face tombs from the restaurants, or people-watching in the seafront tavernas. But for those wishing to burn off their calorific Turkish delight there are three local dance bars available in the town, all playing different styles of music.
The town is full of reasonably priced little shops although half the fun is in haggling over the cost - it is part of their culture so don't be embarrassed and enjoy. For larger items, especially Turkish rugs, you will be offered a glass of apple tea whilst being told the history of carpet making. Jewellery, leather, copper and carved onyx are the best buys. Friday is the day that the market comes to town - fragrant spices, colourful local produce and hand-painted ceramics are just a few of the items on sale
You can either be active, or if you prefer you can be pampered - or both. If you enjoy trekking walk up the mountain to the cliff tombs or try the famous Lycian Way Walk - only 350km long! Trips from the harbour go to Myra - home and church of St Nicholas (our Father Christmas), and the sunken city of Kekova. Kas also has an excellent diving centre for exploring the colourful sea life and after a refreshing dip you can wallow in a mud bath and then treat yourself to a Turkish bath - said to make you look years younger
Kas is located on the Turkish Riviera, 120km southeast of Fethiye and 188km southwest of Antalya.
