Gabaklar Bungalows

Although the facilities at Gabaklar could be described as simple, this is more than compensated for by the thoroughly unpretentious nature of the place, the wonderfully warm welcome, the spectacular bay and the deliciously fresh fish served in the relaxed open-air restaurant.

The meaning of Gabaklar is 'Pumpkin', which is the owners' family name. The family are hospitable and welcoming and operate their business with great pride, treating guests more like family friends. The Gabaklars run a small, well-established three-room pension behind the restaurant in the garden, attracting a following among high calibre city types escaping the mayhem of city life. They have since decided to create pretty wooden bungalows and last winter added some traditional rooms, behind the restaurant in the garden.

The rooms are arranged in pairs, so guests wishing to rent a one-bedroom bungalow will be in a semi-detached unit with a terrace made private by a wooden screen. The buildings are arranged so that maximum privacy is maintained. A shaded terrace runs along the front of each, providing a cool retreat from the midday sun, in a place where time seems to have stood still. Each bedroom is air-conditioned and a small refrigerator is provided to make your stay more comfortable.

The organic kitchen garden is the source of much of the delicious breakfast spread and the location of the traditional rooms hidden away at the back of the garden. Bread is baked on site in a traditional oven and local fishermen bring in their fresh catch every day, a selection of which can be ordered in advance from the restaurant, which is set on a picturesque terrace under impressive mulberry trees. A short path will take you to the magnificent secluded Bay of Gabaklar, just a minute's walk away, where a cooling dip in the sea will build up an appetite for the delicious meals to come. A handful of other restaurants can be found a fifteen-minute walk away, over the hill in the neighbouring bay of Hayitbuku.
