Omer's Houses enjoy a convenient location on the edge of Dalyan, just a ten-minute walk from the village centre and the little harbour where you can catch one of the river boats down to Iztuzu Beach. Yet the moment you pass through the gates in the tall stone walls that encircle these unusual houses, you feel as though you have entered a walled oasis of peace and serenity, harmony and creativity.
For Omer, who built the houses himself, is more of an artist than a developer, and the wonderfully quirky design of the houses is testament to his inspired imagination. It took him years to complete his project and his labour of love has resulted in most charming accommodation, and nomination for a prestigious European design award. There are three separate dwellings contained within the pretty garden, each with its own individual character. As Omer and his two dogs live in a small cottage discreetly tucked into a corner of the property, he is always on hand to look after the properties and the lovely grounds.
The Hamam House sleeps up to four people and is so called because its shower room has been designed in the manner of a traditional Turkish hamam: a round, domed room. The house itself is L-shaped with a delightful little courtyard completing the square plot on which it is built. Natural stone walls, which incorporate old amphorae and scraps of pottery here and there, lend the house a mellow appearance that belies its recent construction. The ground floor comprises a cosy living room, with kilims and floor cushions scattered around a sunken round table, an open fireplace and a rustic but well-equipped kitchen from which stairs lead up to the first floor. Here, two bedrooms open from the galleried landing, both of which have deep built-in wardrobes and doors to a small balcony looking over the courtyard. One of these has twin beds; the other is especially appealing with a round double bed and a ceiling covered entirely in ancient wooden doors.
Gemini Cottage consists of two separate, single-storey buildings facing each other across a private, cobbled path. One contains a twin bedroom with a beautiful wooden ceiling and a fireplace; the other comprises a simple, basic shower room and a simple kitchen with a divan. Outside, between the two, there is a wooden siesta deck: an enchanting spot to relax in the shade.
Perfect for honeymooners, The Round House is built in the shape of a windmill. The huge circular living room, with a sunken table in the centre, is all kilims and floor cushions and the sink and extractor hood in the open plan kitchen have been fashioned from old copper pots. Stairs lead to the upper floor which, apart from the attractively-designed shower room, is taken up by a splendid double bedroom. Low windows on three sides of the house afford views in all directions and a glass dome in the centre of the pitched roof has the round double bed directly below it. In the centre of the lovely gardens there is a small bathing pool which may not be suitable for rigorous exercise but does provide welcome refreshment. Accommodation of such character and originality would be much sought after anywhere in Turkey, and the outskirts of Dalyan village is a peaceful location.
