Nestled on the edge of a forest, Villa Muranco is set away from the usual tourist trail. The owners, Murat and Franco, used to own a smart, successful restaurant in London, specialising in Turkish and Italian cuisine, but gave it all up to settle for the quieter life here in the tiny hamlet of Mazi. The approach to the villa is a delight, following a track through thick forest to suddenly emerge into a small gathering of houses.
This handsome stone cottage, with wooden floors and beamed ceilings, is enticingly decorated in warm shades of chocolate, cream and raspberry. Outside there is a large terrace to dine al fresco, sampling some of the mouth-wateringly traditional Turkish dishes your hosts can prepare for you.
The living area on the ground floor is spacious and atmospheric with the thick stone walls keeping it cool in the mid summer heat. Overlooking the lounge area is a striking galleried landing which runs round two sides of the upper floor. One of the bedrooms is downstairs off the main living area with a tiny shower room opposite. Two of the bedrooms, both with en suite shower rooms, lead off the galleried landing, and the fourth bedroom is a charming attic room with plenty of windows to take advantage of the wonderful views of the forest behind. This rustic retreat, with all the comforts of modern living, is perfect for exploring this unspoilt area of Turkey, including the authentic Sunday street market held at the nearest sizeable settlement of Mumcular, 6 kilometres away. Murat and Franco live next door and have discovered several beautiful beaches 15 kilometres away, which are practically deserted, even at the height of the summer, and are happy to pack up picnics or organise barbecues on the beach.
One of the advantages of the villa is the grounds which surround it, with the pool close to the villa and orchards as far as the eye can see. This is a great area to explore with lots of traditional villages and hamlets around, and if the tranquillity gets too much, Bodrum is a 30 minute drive away, with its sophisticated marina, shops, bars, restaurants and nightlife.
