In the hills above Bodrum overlooking Gumbet bay, it's an excellent base for one of those grazing breaks. You know, a bit of beach on Thursday, some souvenir-shopping on Friday, a museum on Saturday … and so on.
First though, it's ideal for that much-needed burst of tranquillity. A small but developing village encased by leafy olive groves, its overriding mood is one of sleepy lethargy. So much so that all you'll hear is the comforting chorus of cicadas and the clink of ice cubes in your glass. Add those mind-enhancing views over the shimmering Aegean and the combined effect is superbly soothing.
When you get a surge of wanderlust, stick a pin anywhere in the local map. Maybe Gumusluk? A short drive away, this quaint harbour village beckons with lovely sands, clear waters and a column of unpretentious fish restaurants on the water's edge. It's an ultra-romantic dinner venue as a rose-coloured sun sinks below the mountains. Give Bitez or Gumbet a go, enjoying their beautiful, breeze-brushed bays perfect for windsurfing and parasailing. Or head for any of the peninsula's innumerable other beaches, many awarded Blue Flags. Alternatively, take the hire car or dolmus around the charming villages and archeological ruins dusted over the local hills.
For an easy day out, give in to Bodrum. Steeped in history, this beguiling town is dominated by a Crusader castle and offers endless attractions, from a fascinating shipwreck museum to scores of colourful shops and restaurants squeezed within its old quarter and waterfront.
