Although Kadikalesi is only four kilometres north of lively Turgutreis, it’s a world away, in terms of atmosphere. A small beachside village surrounded by citrus groves, it’s kept an authentic Turkish flavour. The main action here is centred around the beach, but walk up to the castle on the hill and you’ll discover a little of the village’s past. In Ottoman times, the local judge lived here, and translated, ‘kadikalesi’ roughly means ‘judge’s castle’. Nowadays it’s little more than a ruin, but the views are worth the walk alone. Dig a little deeper into the village and you’ll find an old Greek church dating back to Roman times. With original engravings above the doorway, it’s weathered well. Aside from that, though, this place really is about its beachfront location. Tavernas and bars cluster close to the shore, with tables and chairs spilling out on to the beach itself. Expect menus of freshly-caught fish and tasty mezes served to sea views. If you’re after a bit more in the way of life, though, hop on a dolmus to Turgutreis or Bodrum. Turgutreis has a modern marina, designer boutiques and the biggest Saturday market on the peninsula, while Bodrum with its castle, bazaars and club-lined streets is great both day and night.
