Guide to Derekoy

A skyline carved with mountain peaks. Orchards laced with the sweet smell of citrus. A peaceful vibe that would please a monk. Sounds pretty dreamy, doesn't it? Well that's the home bagged by Derekoy, a dinky little village that's shown scant regard for the march of time. Set in a lush mountain valley, it's the place to head if you're looking to taste unspoilt Turkey at its best. And its central location in the heart of the Bodrum Peninsula makes it a great base for exploring further afield. Wander through the rabbit's warren of sleepy streets, stopping at the traditional tea house for a caffeine fix. Take a look inside the little art gallery. And get a glimpse of old Bodrum at the derelict olive press or the nearby windmills. Not far from here, around 7 kilometres in fact, you'll find Gumusluk. This pretty seaside village remains largely unspoilt thanks to a conservation order protecting the ancient site of Myndos. Pull up a pew and tuck into an ocean-fresh lunch before wading over to Rabbit Island. The views from this spot are superb – you can see across to the neighbouring island of Kos. So, if you're looking to duck out of life's fast lane for a while, this peaceful pocket of Turkey is just the ticket – with plenty nearby when you're ready to step it up a gear.
