- The Blue Lagoon
Olu Deniz in Dalaman is used to posing for pictures – the deep blue lagoon here is one of Turkey's most–photographed spots. Fringed with white sand and shingle, it's got a mild current so it's great for swimming in. The rugged mountains that frame the picture are good for hiking over, too.
- Meze feasts
You can hardly leave Turkey without trying some meze. It's kind of like Spanish tapas – lots of little dishes to pick and choose from. Icli kofte is a good choice. They're juicy meatballs with a crispy shell, filled with ground beef, onions, garlic and cumin. Follow it up with baklava – bite–sized sponge cakes drenched in honey and sprinkled with powdered pistachio.
- Alanya Castle
A 30–minute walk down the coast from Alanya's harbour is this Medieval castle. It's a huge, sprawling ruin, and there are 6–kilometre walls and a mosaic–tiled Byzantine church to root around. And from the top of the walls, you've got a fantastic bird's–eye view of the city below.
Kusadasi is a top spot to see both sides of Turkey. It's got smart shopping and modern bars, mixed up with sugarcube houses and wooden–clad, traditional meze restaurants. The Grand Bazaar is a must–see – a huge, winding souk filled with spices, woven carpets and leather. Turkey doesn't get much more authentic than this...
In recent years, stylish Bodrum Town has has been developing a reputation as the Turkish answer to St–Tropez. You'll find a well–to–do set down at the marina, enjoying the glamorous restaurants and bars. While away an hour or two watching the yachts go by – most of them are bigger than the average semi–detached house.
