This hotel has got the lot. A trio of pools ticks off rooftop and garden numbers, while the restaurants include a buffet place and an à la carte pool bar. The location aims high, too - it sits in a high-end postcode that comes with a beach.
Sitting in an upmarket corner of Tenerife, the Fanabe Costa Sur Hotel looks out over the sparkling sapphire seas. In fact, you’re just a short stroll down a steep slope from the honey-coloured sands of both Playa Fanabe and Playa del Duque. And there’s a sprinkling of shops, bars and restaurants even closer.
It’s not a big brash resort though. Far from it. Here, you’re at the heart of a restful residential area, where most of the 5 star hotels on the island congregate. From the moment you set eyes on the Fanabe though, you probably won’t want to venture far. Sat in gorgeous green grounds, you’re most definitely in for a treat here. You’ll know you’re onto a good thing as soon as you step into the lobby. Light, luminous and lavish, it’s a chic affair all round. We’re talking glossy marble floors. Oh-so inviting sofas. And floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlook one of the eye-catching pool areas.
Talking of which, you’re totally spoilt for choice in the swimming stakes. With three pools to choose from, you’ll have to do the rounds before you decide on a favourite. If it’s jaw-dropping views you want, head for the roof terrace where two of the plunge pools live. Or for a truly tropical setting, there's the main pool sitting in the grounds, surrounded by exotic plants and swishing palms. Rather keep active? No problem. Keep up with your exercise routine at the fully equipped gym, which also offers aerobics lessons and massages. Join in the fun and games with the entertainment team. Or choose from an exhaustive list of sports that includes minigolf, tennis and football. However you work up an appetite, when you’re ready to eat the buffet restaurant offers up international favourites, with on-the-spot cooking stations a mainstay. There's also an a la carte lunchtime eatery by the pool, and you can tuck in to sandwiches at the lobby bar.
Full Board buffet meals - time restrictions apply. Late breakfasts 10.00-12.30.
Selected alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks - time restrictions apply.
Cakes and desserts 15.00-18.00. Sandwiches 21.00-23.00.
For buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner with regular theme nights and show-cooking stations. In the summer months the restaurant opens at a later time of 7pm and closes at 10pm. Special dietary requirements can be catered for if you let reception know in advance. Gentlemen are required to wear long trousers and a shirt for dinner.
My husband and I have just returned from a week in the Fanabe. It was our fourth stay here and I previously reviewed it about two years ago. We keep going back because this hotel really suits us. The rooms are spacious and kept in immaculate condition by the wonderful cleaning staff. In fact all the staff are so welcoming and courteous. The pool areas are well maintained with plenty of sunbeds. Meals are served buffet style with lots of choice . Even the fussiest eater will find something . I enjoyed the aqua gym which takes place four times a week. Nighttime entertainment was pleasant ...easy listening music.
The hotel is located a short walk from the beach. The market (Thursdays and Saturdays) is five minutes away and there is a shopping centre with supermarket across the road.
I can't wit to go back again!More
Excellent Hotel, great price
Spent 10 days here half board in October with 1 and 3 year old daughters.
Hotel was spotless, and staff were extremely friendly and accommodating with one minor exception in the form of a grumpy waitress one evening - to be fair I did come in just before closing.
There was a huge choice at the buffet breakfast and dinner, and the food was of very good quality. We had a packed lunch one day as an alternative to the evening meal that would have fed us for days.
After the first few days I learned to pace my self with the food as I was finding one meal a day was enough, but I wanted to try everything.
The evening entertainment was very cheesy and not our thing really, but the kids loved it so that suited us. The rooms were very quiet, I think we were lucky with the other guests at the time.
The staff running the mini club were really good, though our children were a bit young they were still accommodated without issue.
The pool was clean, we always managed to get a bed, though I can imagine in peak season this would not be the case.
The room had a large double bed and two sofa beds, one we used for our 3 year old. A travel cot was provided for the 1 year old.
For anyone going with young kids, be aware that if you go through the restaurant to the back and turn right there is an outside section which is a bit less hectic and they can stretch their legs. We only discovered it towards the end and it made meal times a lot easier.
It was a 10/15 minute walk downhill to the beach, we walked to Americas in about 45 mins.
My one gripe is the daft rule about men wearing long trousers in the restaurant for dinner. My thick English blood meant I was uncomfortably hot in trousers and this was October. Had it been August I really would not have been happy. I tried to get away with calf length shorts but that was no go, be warned.
Oh and wifi is intermittent at best.
I am not sure what the odd reviewer has to moan about on here about this hotel, or what their expectations are. If they want 5 start then pay the difference. This is what it says on the tin and a bit more.More

nice hotel but pools are really cold
Just come back from a weeks stay with hubby and found the hotel and staff excellent. Fantastic beds in room and food was great. However all swimming pools were freezing - I love to have a dip and good swim but the water was far too cold - hubby went it on first day but developed heavy cold next day and didn't bother again. Sun bathing on roof terrace was excellent with fantastic views and staff very friendly - get a pool view if you can.More

Nice Hotel, poor entertainment
Stayed at this hotel in September for two weeks with my husband, hotel room good standard need pool view. Food good variety but take travel kettle for that first cuppa in the morning. Entertainment needs up-dating same old same old each night. Lovely show area downstairs but views obscured by pillars, but should be a disco club for the adults as beautifull decor, have left this on suggestion sheet. Watch out for the occasional cock roches around the outside tables and chairs. Wouldnt go back to this hotel though , more for the kids to do us adults want to dance as well. Half board is better as food becomes boring.More
I stayed at this hotel last week for one week. Like many others I was a little apprehensive after reading some of the bad reports. I found this hotel excellent. Rooms were large and very clean - I had a view of the mountains which was excellent - everything was cleaned daily by very efficient staff. The hotel itself was wonderful with various areas for sitting or lounging. We were all inclusive and found that option worked extremely well for us - the food was plentiful and varied over our week - I particularly liked the vegetarian options and as for the desserts - well let's just say I put on some weight this year! The snack area at the pool was excellent too. We preferred the rooftop area as there were no children allowed and it was very peaceful. The hotel has a policy which does not allow sunbeds to be booked and even though the hotel was 100% full we always found sunbeds when we wanted them. The staff were very friendly and helpful from our first contact at reception on arrival all the way through to the end of our holiday. The market is held twice weekly in the car park next to the hotel - great market with excellent bargains. The hotel is situated centrally and you can walk to beach easily or to a couple of shopping centres nearby without having to think about getting taxis. I never usually post but felt I had to say something to counteract the bad reviews. I would recommend this hotel and hope to be back again soon.More
