'A gem for all beach-lovers, attractive Arenal fringes a fabulous curve of sands in one of north Menorca's finest settings.'
Beach lovers prepare – the sands at Arenal d'en Castell will blow you away. Soft as talcum powder, as pale as your sun-starved limbs and with azure waters that are impossible to resist, they have to be some of the best in Menorca. And for an island renowned for its idyllic beaches, that's really saying something.
Set around a near-circular bay tipped by low, rugged cliffs, the beach is long and broad, so there's always ample space. Breakfast done with, it's just a matter of sauntering down here, unrolling your towel and absorbing the warm Menorcan sunbeams. Intersperse your sunbathing with forays into the crisp, ultra-blue waters – swimming or on a pedalo or windsurf board – and your day will be complete.
Edging the sands, a row of cafes and bars serve up appetising Spanish snacks and cold drinks when you need refreshment. Behind the beach, the attractive modern resort clambers up the rolling hillside, its modern white buildings hinting at a sugar-cube amphitheatre. Wander up here to enjoy the bevy of souvenir shops before tucking into a starlit supper of your favourite cuisine – Arenal's eateries offer such diverse delights as tapas bars, British pubs and Chinese restaurants. Later, if you're not ready for that pillow just yet, call in at the late-night bars to chat and laugh with new found friends.
During your holiday, don't miss the island's capital Mahon with its quaint harbourside. Set a day aside for Cuidadela too. The island's capital before Mahon, this historic town has elegant paved streets and a wonderful restaurant-lined quayside. Alternatively, savour a more rustic Menorca by roaming its lush interior and visiting Fornells, a picture-perfect fishing village close by.
