Hotel Romantic is in a quiet area, 15 minutes’ walk from the coil of busy streets in the centre of Puerto Pollensa. It overlooks the Bay of Pollensa, and has far-reaching views of the Mediterranean Sea and the UNESCO-listed Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range. Puerto Pollensa Beach is just across the road – its eastern end is particularly secluded. Further afield, S’Albufeira Nature Park is 20 minutes on the local bus. It’s a haven for wetland wildlife, including a wide variety of heron and dragonfly species.

The hotel is designed to allow the beautiful views to take centre-stage. The spacious terrace, for example, looks out across the beach. There’s also a bar on the sand, which serves drinks and light snacks. The hotel also has a little restaurant serving a buffet breakfast and dinner in the evening. The menu here focuses on Spanish classics like paella, along with international favourites like pizza.

Although the hotel doesn’t have a pool, you can use the one at the neighbouring Pollensa Park Hotel, which also has tennis courts.

Bedrooms, meanwhile, are low key, with whitewashed walls and dark wooden furniture. They have lots of light courtesy of glass balcony doors and large windows. All come with balconies, and some also offer sea views.

Your guide to Puerto Pollensa, Majorca

“Mix a good dollop of traditional Majorca with plenty of things to see and do, lay them out around a wide, curving sandy bay, and there you have Puerto Pollensa.”

Set against a backdrop of mountains, Puerto Pollensa’s a charming resort that’s made up of great restaurants, lazy days on the beach, and a sleepy way of life.

And the scenery’s not bad either. You’ll find traditional Mallorcan stone houses mingling with modern villas, built around the curved, palm-shaded bay. This is a popular spot for early evening strolls, where you can stop halfway and sit down at the pavement cafés and restaurants. You’ll find traditional spots offering typically Spanish grub, or Indian and Chinese restaurants tempting you with an international flavour.

Food aside, the beach is definitely one to check out. This wide, sandy shore slips gently into the shallow sea, where little ones can safely splash in the waters. Older types can create a splash further down, where there’s watersports galore. We’re talking windsurfing, sailing, waterskiing and plenty more besides.

But don’t confine yourself to the beach every day, especially when it’s so easy to explore the surrounding area. A short journey will take you to the charming Roman town of Pollensa, packed with traditional architecture and quaint shops.

Or check out the northern point of Formentor, where you can soak up the spectacular roads or take a boat trip around the base of the immense cliffs.

We returned in May 2010 for two weeks having stayed here many times. We got the usual friendly welcome from the reception staff and restaurant staff and regular barman, the same staff for years which says a lot. Food adequate something for all tastes... more on this review
