Guide to Puerto Pollensa

'Mix a good dollop of traditional Majorca with plenty of things to see and do, lay them out around a wide, curving sandy bay, and there you have Puerto Pollensa.'

Set against a backdrop of mountains, Puerto Pollensa's a charming resort that's made up of great restaurants, lazy days on the beach, and a sleepy way of life. And the scenery's not bad either. You'll find traditional Mallorcan stone houses mingling with modern villas, built around the curved, palm-shaded bay. This is a popular spot for early evening strolls, where you can stop halfway and sit down at the pavement cafes and restaurants. You'll find traditional spots offering typically Spanish grub, or Indian and Chinese restaurants tempting you with an international flavour. Food aside, the beach is definitely one to check out. This wide, sandy shore slips gently into the shallow sea, where little ones can safely splash in the waters. Older types can create a splash further down, where there's watersports galore. We're talking windsurfing, sailing, waterskiing and plenty more besides. But don't confine yourself to the beach every day, especially when it's so easy to explore the surrounding area. A short journey will take you to the charming Roman town of Pollensa, packed with traditional architecture and quaint shops. Or check out the northern point of Formentor, where you can soak up the spectacular roads or take a boat trip around the base of the immense cliffs.

Beaches

Puerto Pollensa is host to a long, wide sandy beach that curves around the bay where both windsurfing and waterskiing are popular. There are also a number of small, natural, sand and pebble beaches to explore.

Eating out

Enjoy the leisurely atmosphere as the sun goes down with a stroll along the harbour front before making your choice for dinner. Puerto Pollensa has some truly excellent seafood restaurants. Sample one of the many varieties of fine fish from the Majorcan shores- Lubina (Sea Bass), Rape (Monk Fish), or even the big, ugly jawed C'ap Roig, with its juicy white meat, all of which are firm favourites with the locals.

Nightlife

As well as its relaxed atmosphere Puerto Pollensa does boast a good choice of bars, some with live music and discos. Though for a more vibrant selection of bars and discos it is worth checking out the various offerings of nearby Alcudia.

Shopping

There is a plentiful array of local shopping to tempt you, or alternatively, why not make a visit to the old town of Pollensa where some of the more sophisticated handicrafts and art can be sampled. Look out for traditional pottery and stylish contemporary ceramics, or visit the Sunday morning market with its truly charming ambience.

Local information

Why not make a visit to the old Roman town of Pollensa? Situated just 5km inland, this renowned artist's colony, with its narrow streets and wonderfully restored stone village houses is steeped in both charm and history. Take a trip up the Calvary Steps, or visit the Convent of Santo Domingo. You can also enjoy a boat trip around the spectacular cliffs of Cabo Formentor, plunging some 800 feet into the sea.
