The Spanish royals are often spotted on holidays to Cala Mayor. And it’s no wonder – this place has a standout sandy beach and is only a few minutes from Palma.
Head west from Palma and almost immediately you’ll hit Cala Major. This bay-side resort is only a few kilometres from the capital, so pulls in visitors who are looking to pair sands with sightseeing. It’s got quite an upmarket feel – tucked away overlooking the water is the Marivent Palace, holiday home of the Spanish royals.
Cala Mayor’s namesake beach is a wide curve of golden sand. It’s bookended by rocky outcrops, so the waters here are usually calm and sheltered. Head south-west, and after 10 minutes you’ll reach the tiny, chic resort of Illetes, which lines up a chain of sandy coves.
Close to Palma
A 10-minute bus ride will land you plum in the centre of Palma. This stylish city is home to high-end boutiques, gourmet restaurants and lanes lined with tapas and wine bars. And on the sightseeing front, there’s a dramatic cathedral and an Instagram-worthy old quarter.
