Hacienda San Jorge

in Los Cancajos , La Palma T rating: 4

  • Close to the beach
  • Regular live music
  • Spectacular gardens
An attractive hotel set in lush grounds 2 minutes’ walk from the sea.
Designed in traditional style by the Canarian artist Facundo Fierro, the Hacienda San Jorge offers the most attractive accommodation in the small beach resort of Playa de Los Cancajos, with pretty pastel shaded buildings grouped around a large, delightfully mature garden. The apartments are almost obscured by the dense foliage and the tall palm trees that turn the spacious grounds into a tropical oasis. Relaxing on the sunloungers by the huge saltwater swimming pool is a treat to be savoured. Should you prefer to swim in the open sea, the black sandy beach of Los Cancajos is literally just across the road from the hotel.

The apartments are all tastefully decorated and very well equipped. The Hacienda has its own restaurant with views of both the sea and the pool and gardens. Additional restaurants and shops can be found in the resort centre, a five-minute walk away. The guests at Hacienda San Jorge can enjoy all the facilities of a hotel combined with the freedom and space of self-catering accommodation, making it an excellent choice for easy-going beach holidays.

Your guide to Los Cancajos, La Palma

“With dark sandy beaches, pristine waters and great restaurants, Los Cancajos rolls all the best bits of La Palma into one.”

Los Cancajos - all the guide books describe it as ‘La Palma’s most developed holiday resort’. But that’s almost a contradiction in terms. Put it next to somewhere like Benidorm and then you’ll know what developed really is. Granted, with its good selection of restaurants and fledgling nightlife, Los Cancajos is certainly the biggest resort on the island. But it’s still got all of that low-key loveliness that makes La Palma so special. Made up of a series of hotels running along a small stretch of coast, Los Cancajos looks out to sea and is backed by the impressive central ridge of the island. It’s got some pretty magical views alright. And talking of eye candy, from here you can often see across to neighbouring Tenerife and La Gomera. And if you don’t fancy a lie in, the sunrises here are out of this world – the sun peeps up above the horizon in swirls of bright pink and burnished gold. Jaw-dropping moments aside, Los Cancajos most definitely get the thumbs up in the location stakes. Not only is it really near to the airport but Santa Cruz is close by, too - great if you want to pack in some sightseeing. But Los Cancajos’ pièce de résistance is, without a shadow of a doubt, its beaches. Three bays steal the limelight, spreading inviting sweeps of fine black sand before you to tempt you into their arms. Awarded Blue Flags for their excellence and clear, sheltered waters, they’re brilliant for families and sun and sea addicts. And if you’re into snorkelling and scuba-diving, come on in, the water’s lovely. Beneath the surface lies a treasure trove of marine life, from barracudas to rays.

My wife and I have just returned from a week at the Hacienda San Jorge. We enjoyed the hotel and its grounds tremendously. It is located about 45minutes walk from the capital or 10 minutes on the bus. The grounds, pool and dining area are outstanding... more on this review
