Cala d'Or Apartments

in Puerto Rico , Gran Canaria T rating: 3

  • Day and night entertainment
  • Magnificent views
  • Spacious apartments
A hillside spot with great views and staff so friendly they get personal mentions on TripAdvisor.
For a hotel with a view, the Cala d’Or gets top marks. Built on a hillside overlooking Puerto Rico, you’re on top of all the action without being swamped by it. The bird’s eye setting does mean steps, though – there are 200 in total. If you don’t fancy the walk there are plenty of taxis waiting to take you to the top for a small fee - expect to pay between two and three euros.

Pool-wise, it’s a little on the small side - but there’s still plenty of room to bag yourself a sunny spot by the water. And while the Cala d’Or is mainly self-catering, you’ll find snacks and drinks available at the pool bar. If you want to venture a little further afield, the beach isn’t far – fifteen-minutes on foot, or five in a cab.

Inside, the rooms are pretty basic, but clean and well-equipped. We’re talking fresh-white walls, open-plan kitchens and private balconies. Plus, full-sized ovens, microwaves, kettles and toasters come as standard.

Last but not least, the entertainment programme goes down a storm. Whether it’s a quiz by the pool you’re after, or a magic show to keep the kids’ happy, you’re likely to find it here.

Your guide to Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria

"Fun and sun-seekers alike will love Puerto Rico for its countless entertainment, great shopping and scorching nightlife."

Holidays don’t come more fun-packed or sun-packed than this. Set in a narrow rocky valley, with apartments and hotels terraced up its steep sides, Puerto Rico is a family favourite that’s filled with things to do. And its position on Gran Canaria’s south-west coast means it basks in superb sunshine too. With calm waters and cashmere soft sands, you’d never guess the resort’s popular beach was man-made. Get here early to grab a prize spot, or head for the two public swimming pools surrounded by sub-tropical gardens, just behind the sands. Once you’re done lazing around, you’ll find everything else here is all go. Stroll to the marina and pick from the multitude of watersports available, including parasailing, pleasure cruises, jet skiing and game fishing. Alternatively, a whole bunch of other activities await behind the waterfront – the water park, minigolf or tennis anyone? And don’t forget the shopping. With its innumerable duty-free outlets, boutiques and gift stores, Puerto Rico is a shopaholic’s dream. When all this gets too much, you’ll find lots of places to simply sit, eat and enjoy a few sangrias. Hightail it down to the marina and take a seat at one of the many British-style restaurants and pavement cafés – or soak up the atmosphere of a tapas bar and chill to your heart’s content. By night, the resort fits firmly in the ‘something for everyone’ bracket. Quiet waterfront restaurants? Tick. Family-friendly bars? Tick. Late-night discos playing your favourite party anthems? Tick. Around the traffic-free centre, you’ll find a great selection of pubs, clubs and karaoke bars. There’s a pace to suit everyone in this fun-filled island slice.
