If you’re looking for non-stop sightseeing or nightlife, you’d better cross Playa Taurito off your possibles list right now. One of a string of purpose-built resorts lacing Gran Canaria’s shores near Puerto Rico, this is only for people with one thing on their mind - the beach. So if you’re already picturing yourself stretched out on that sunbed, read on. The beach is lovely. A swathe of glittering sand clasped between two wind-sheltering cliffs, it’s lapped by calm, sapphire waters perfect for everyone. Perhaps best of all, it rarely gets overcrowded. Just stroll along its soft sands and you’ll soon find your own sunbathing strip, complete with inspiring views over the vast Atlantic and cloudless sky. Then just reach for that book, and start your holiday proper. Across from the beach, you’ll find a café and shop or two to keep you stocked up with snacks and basics. And there’s another bonus. Amid tropical palms here is Taurito’s lido – a lagoon-style pool open to visitors. Complete with bridges, terraces and bars, it’s ideal for a switch of scenery. Apart from these pockets of activity, Taurito pretty much slumbers in the sun. Come dusk, most people stay in their hotels’ restaurants, perhaps ending the day at a beachfront bar, sipping a sangria in the glow of a romantic sunset. For shops and action, upbeat Puerto Rico awaits along the coast. Or for a slower tempo, hop on a bus to nearby Puerto Mogan. This picturesque village has a Venetian-style canal and lovely harbourfront lined with delicious bars and restaurants – the perfect antidote to that hotspot on the sands.
