2 weeks in Maspalomas

My wife and I are in our late 50's and this was our second visit to Maspalomas in 14 years so we are not regular visitors. However we could see the changes since our last visit. Cordial Sandy Golf was adequate accommodation for our holiday. Which was our main holiday together. On arrival at the venue there was a security man on the main gate. I didn't see him again during our stay after this first evening. However I didn't see any likely hood of violence, theft, or nuclear attack. The Bungalow (No. 64) was clean and well appointed. Everything you need if you are self catering. However we tended to eat out most of the time. It was quite hot while we were there. Average 25 - 30 deg C. The ceiling fans in the bedroom and sitting/kitchen area were ok. The one in the bedroom fan was less effective than the other which is a shame as that is where it was most needed. It was also noisey sometimes. Not that that was such a problem as we had trouble sleeping in the heat. The beds have a plastic cover on the mattress which enhanced the sweatyness. I managed to break the Coffee machine on the firstt full day. Don't over tighten the screw top after you've brewed up as the vacuum glass liner of the jug doesn't like the pressure from the boiled water. A bit weird as I thought the whole idea was to keep the heat in? We used the Restaurant belonging to the complex on the opposite side of the road at Cordial Green Golf. It was good value for money but very samey as is most of the food we encountered in Gran Canaria. The pool area is very clean and the poole bar useful for lunch and a drink. It was the locals holiday time so it was busy with children which was mildy annoying but expected I suppose. The pool can't be called a swimming pool. More of a leisure pool for standing around in to cool off. In fact I would discourage any swimmers from trying to do a full swim from one side to the other unless you swim with your head up as there is no way of seeing the edge of the pool because it is very white and invisible in the strong sunlight. I nearly came a cropper on my first crossing. There is an island in the middle of the pool as well which suffers the same problem. Beware!. Oh and don't dive in because it's not deep enough. There is a notice telling you that. The notice about not reserving sunbeds is not enforced and totally ignored by the locals. The pool barman is friendly and speaks a little English. Reception are very helpful. They gave us some insect killer to wipe out the ride on Cockroaches we found in our bathroom on the first night. The Cockroaches didn't come back after a generous marinading. There was no Mosquito problem but a few other interesting but not nasty insects. The feral cats were visible but not a problem. Our German neighbours (Big Flag hanging on their gazebo) were feeding and encouraging them. I narrowly avoided a diplomatic incident when my wife shouted at them not to feed them. There is also some bird life in the area with Parrots (Noisy) Cetti's Warbler, Chiff Chaffs even a Blackbird one day. We bought some stuff from the little supermarket at Green Golf and also visited the bigger one near Faro 2. The nearer one is ok and more convenient. So to conclude - we had a very relaxing sun filled holiday. I have done a separate report for Maspalomas Beach and Playa Del Inglis.More

Arrived in the early hours after a flight delay, check in was at Cordial Green Golf just across the road, easy and simple check in, safe 23 euros for a week that includes the 10 euro refundable deposit. Where to start. Rooms are standard 2 beds and a sofa not sofa bed for 3rd person in the lounge, usual facilities kettle toaster microwave and 2 ring hob, smallish bathroom with a shower that is powerful and can easily soak the bathroom, nice little rear drying area with a washing line, front porch patio area with table and 3 chairs and 3 sunbeds, rooms are comfortable with a ceiling fan that isn't worth switching on as it just blows boiling hot air down onto you. Night time temperature in the apartments can be an issue as there's no air conditioning which in my opinion in a climate like that is very much needed,we ended up showering 3 or 4 times over night to cool down. The whole complex is spotless with gardeners groundsmen working tirelessly none stop to make the surroundings excellent. The pool is huge and warm plenty of sunbeds but beware be up before 8am to reserve one. We witnessed beds being saved only for the people not to return until around 4pm. Life guards on site and the pool bar serves nice food. Ice creams etc are a total rip off so go to the shop located across the road at Green golf. Breakfast is the norm plenty of choice and hot, evening meal or lunch if you swap around again was plentiful and hot with a bbq being served twice otherwise it's different meats fish salads wedges baked potatoes, chips were served once in 6 nights which makes a refreshing change from every meal. All the staff are fantastic and friendly, i had emailed in advance as my niece was 18 whilst we were there and i arranged a cake, what i didn't expect was a specially made up table Champagne and all the waiters singing happy birthday and even they looked like they'd changed that night especially, a massive thanks must go to Felix for making it special. The Hotel isn't a 10 min walk from the beach it is around 30 and the same to the local market which is located behind the run down shopping centre faro 2 where the Dino supermarket is. Only note for concern was the 1 night as we were leaving Cordial Green Golf after our meal the complex was stormed by no less than 10 armed officers. The next day there was guards on both complexes i asked and was told he wasn't aware of any incident, until later when he told me it was 2 brothers fighting but i'm unsure of the truth. lots of different nationalities mainly German and Spanish. And just to note it seems any attire around the pool goes mainly topless and with g strings seemed to be the main choice of swim wear. All in all a great holiday but wasn't keen on Gran Canaria as a whole so probably won't return it's to built up.More

Fifth stay at Sandy Golf

The weather was amazing, very hot and sunny. We usually stay May or Sept/Oct and have found it is mainly couples from a good mix of nationalities staying then. This time we stayed for 24 nights from 22nd June and found the majority were local family groups which made the pool quite noisy and full, the sun loungers were reserved from early morning. As well as the handy courtesy busy you can easily get around using the local bus service. You can walk from down the sea front from Playa del Ingles to San Agustin and the other way Playa de Morgan is well worth a visit as are Porto Rico, Anfi and Arguineguin but you have to use the bus service or take a ferry between these resorts. We enjoyed a meal at the Bamboo Garden Chinese restaurant a few minutes from Sandy Golf but we mainly bought food from the Dino supermaket where you can buy anything you need. The mini market across from Sandy golf is handy but more expensive with less choice. At Green golf they do have entertainment in the bar if you choose to, including a parrot show which is entertaining. The apartments are comfortable and the sunny patio was well used, it is ideal for a self catering holiday. We will be returning again but will stay a bit earlier or later in the year as we used to as it is quieter.More

Nice Bungalow, shame about the shower leaking

Arrived around 11.00pm, check in was straight forward. Bungalow was clean, beds were comfortable. Kitchen area nice, with hob, microwave and kettle, but did not use cooking facilities as Half Board. Food was good on the whole, but some days choice was not to our taste and not always available on the lunch time. Bathroom with shower, also very clean. Our only issue was the shower which in our weeks stay blocked up and turned the bathroom into a river 4 times. Reception sent maintenance to unblock it very quickly but once is a nuisance but 4 times is unacceptable. All reception offered were more clean towels. Outside drying area very useful, especially to sweep the water over flowing from the bathroom into. Swimming pool was one of the best I have used, very big and we made full use of it due to the heat. Easiest way to get around is a Taxi, which was quite cheap, but there is also a free bus to the beach and shops. Staff were friendly and helpful, especially the maintenance man who kept apologising for the blocked shower and said it was a known problem. Nice peaceful location, great for families but do not think we will be returning.More

Lovely stay and holiday

Stayed here whilst on holiday with my friends. Great little bungalows, they're basic but have everything you could possibly need for you holiday. The pool is great and there is a little bar/cafe where you can get simple snacks and drinks. The staff of reception and the maids have been great. Helped us book our excursions and cleaned our rooms...sorry about the mess. They also fixed a slight problem we had within hours, we had the sewer water coming up from the shower....literally a shower of s**t. But reception sorted it straight away. Only downstairs to this resort is its slightly out the way for restaurants and bars. If your happy to make your own food and drinks and sit on the complex all day it's amazing, if you want to dine out thought it's a 10-15 minute walk to nearest places to eat. Maybe that's cos were on the wrong side of the island for that it's seems more family orientated and quite. Good thing we're past clubbing lol More
