"Skirting a beach straight from paradise, quiet Costa Calma is made-to-measure for long, sultry days on the sands."
If all you're asking for is a tranquil beach where you can melt away those frown lines, then your quest is over. Peaceful Costa Calma on Fuerteventura's eastern is as soothing as its name suggests. It's a good looking assortment of modern hotels and little shopping centres that draws an international crowd, but it's the beach here that really steals the show. An extension of Jandia's glorious sands – combined, they make up what's known as Playa Sotavento – this is no ordinary beach. Stretching far into the distance and overlooked by the extinct Pico de Zarza volcano, its vast, desert-like sands and perfect blue sky look like a scene from a sci-fi movie. Here, the warm, breeze-brushed waters are a windsurfer's dream. In fact, the beach plays host to the Annual World Championships. What's more, the gently shelving, silky sands are perfect for stretching out all day, and if you fancy some extra comfort, you'll also find groups of sun loungers and sunshades. After a rigorous day's lolling, the relaxed atmosphere continues, with most evening entertainment provided by the hotels. And if you're in the mood to roam out, a few karaoke and music bars sprinkled around the resort provide some foot-tapping fun. While you're here, don't miss the chance to unearth Fuerteventura's wilder and historical side. Take a jeep and head south west to find secret coves where you won't see a soul all day. Catch a bus to pretty Pajara with its ornate 17th century church or Betancuria, the former capital. Or for sightseeing of a showier kind, go and see the wreck of a commercial American ship in a tiny bay on the west coast – its rusting hulk a heart-lurching contrast to the beauty around it.
