Hotel Barcelo Fuerteventura Thalasso Spa

This beachfront hotel has been awarded Spain’s highest award for quality.

This huge hotel is just a stone’s throw from a sandy beach. And it’s also a 10-minute walk to Caleta de Fuste’s pint-sized harbour – there are a handful of bars and restaurants right on the water.

The hotel holds the Q award for quality. Thanks to the outdoor lagoon pools and al fresco grill restaurant, it’s easy to see why. There’s another buffet restaurant, as well as nightly live shows.

Would not go back

This really is not a 4star hotel. The main areas are clean and tidy, the rooms are basic but need updating. Requested a double room and got a twin. Didn't realise until we got to the room after lugging our own cases that we needed to go back to reception and get a key for the safe, and then found you have to hire the safe for 30 euros! No tea and coffee tray in room, got to the fourth day and beds still hadn't been changed. I called reception who were quite rude and explained I had to sleep in it 3 times first I explained she needed to learn how to count, eventually called back and agreed to change it. Maid came and asked which sheet I wanted changing, I said the whole thing, then tried to leave without changing my husbands bed! You have to leave a card on your bed if you want it changing every other day appose to every third day, but even though we did this it still only got changed once more in 11 days. There was air con but hardly worked and banged and rattled in the wall all night, made me want to scream. There restaurant is so so busy and noisy, there is no variety in the food and very little choice just lots of basic salad. Normally there are other restaurants to choose from but there's just nothing, it's so basic, with no atmosphere, and sometimes difficult to find a seat or get served a drink once sat down, and it's so so hot there is NO AIR CON. The last three days we really couldn't face going in there and ate out instead. The pools are ok but the one near the bar is quite noisy and the entertainment team are annoying shouting all the time. There are only one set of toilets which are by the restaurant so it's quite a trek to go to the toilet from the so called quiet pool, especially when your wet and 6 months pregnant. The quite pool does have plenty of beds round, but the grout is going black and rust patches, lots of broken tiles by the steps and within the pool that are sharp. To use the beach for the day it's 10.50 per couple for two beds and a parasol, the beds were uncomfortable and really was a lot of money and not worth it. The resort it's self is very small, the bars are all very small often long and narrow and just not atmosphere anywhere. There's a Chinese restaurant called the Great Wall which was lovely and would recommend and the Sports Tavern bar was friendly as for the others they we nothing special. The evening entertainment isn't bad there are some shows that are good, and some so bad that they are funny like the magician! I certainly won't go back and wouldn't recommend to anyone.More

Stayed for 1 week in October school holidays. Average all round. Quick & easy to get to from airport. Good location & pools, though for some reason pool only heated on our last day. Food & drink average, bit samey. Poor wifi in rooms. Very amateurish entertainment.More

Another Good Hotel

Just come back from 1 week at this hotel and have had a lovely time. Great choices in food staff very attentive . Trousers being worn for dinner by men in my opinion makes it nicer as the men in general look smarter then. Plenty of sun beds , which were close together but at least there were plenty for everybody also very spacious beach at back of hotel. All areas very clean. Entertainment better than most hotels we have stayed at.More

Relaxing break

Recently stayed here at the beginning of September. We had a room in block 3 on the ground floor. The room was spacious and the third bed was comfortable and it was very quiet never heard much noise at all throughout our stay. Was not very keen on the bathroom set up, there is a toilet and bath with shower which was very good in a room and then an open area with a basin not helpful if you want a private area for getting dressed etc. As the room was on the ground floor we had a spacious decked area outside with 2 sunbeds and a parasol with bushes each side as a privacy hedge we had the afternoon sun and was great for escaping from the pool area and get some direct shade that you can poisition to suit. In the pool area there are a lot of sunbeds but was not very keen on the set up, there are not many with shade and the ones with shade are very difficult to move around as it all set, ie big areas with block shelter. The sunbeds are also very close together but you are able to alter the bottom of the beds to a sitting position. The pool was nice although a few people have complained about it being saltwater this didn't bother us. The dining room was large and with lots of seats. It was self seating and self service apart from the drinks which is always painful as you have to wait for service and I much prefer to just be able to get my own. The food was okay and there was a large choice to suit most people. I liked smoothies at breakfast. The only thing which I found frustrating was getting coffee in the morning, it didn't matter where you sat it was such a chore, they really should think about a better way! The evening entertainment was excellent with the team putting on various shows the best entertainment I have encountered. The choice of drinks at the bar was good but was a bit miffed that only certain cocktails were part of the all inclusive package. The surrounding area was good with supermarkets, bars and close access to the beach the sea was nice but avoid when the tide is out as it is all large rocks which makes getting in horrendous if you don't have beach shoes. There is a crazy golf attached to the hotel which was ok to kill a few hours for €5 but the hotel could do with cleaning it up a bit. There is a huge promanade which goes on for miles and you can follow it around and see the chipmunks and there is a road there and back which cuts the time in half just follow the road signposted for the police station. We hired a car for a day and visited quite a few places would recommend this as the roads are really quite in comparisons to ours. You can rent a car from just round the corner and this was still cheaper than the deal first choice were offering. On a final point the resort was really close for transfer which is great after you have been on a plane for four hours.More

Good, with some room for improvement

Just returned from a two week stay at this hotel. Overall I would say this was a four star hotel. The hotel was modern and clean. We were travelling with our one year old son for the first time - I emailed before to ask for a ground floor room and not only did they accomodate us they gave us a perfect room with an enclosed patio - perfect for our wee boy to run around safely in. I could see that the others in rooms next to us had small children too and I got the feeling they really try to accomodate people. I thought the buffett food was pretty good. For breakfast you could get cereal, fruit, paistries, full cooked breakfast, pancakes, fresh juice, coffee - everything you could want. Lunch there was always pizza, pasta, a bruschetta bar, salads, a couple of roast dishes/fish dishes, ice cream, fruit, sweets. There was also a lovely lady making toastie/wraps most days at lunch. Dinner was a similar format with different dishes to that offered at lunch. There was a chocolate fountain 4 nights we were there. One night they had steaks as well, and there were a number of theme evenings - I thought the chinese night was the best, the food was really good that night. others have commented about the fact you have to wear trousers in the evening, and I thought this was pretty uneccessary. Its a bit warm for that and I think they should change that rule to allow smart/tailored shorts. We didn't really use the pool but it seemed popular, though the beds were a bit squashed together for my liking. The beach is right outside the hotel - if you have kids I would recomend taking jelly shoes as it is a little rocky. Our sink backed up when we were there - we informed reception, went out for an hour came back to our room and it was already fixed. I felt pretty confident when I was there that if there was a problem they would fix it for you - which was reassuring especially when travelling with a small child. Our maid was very lovely - cleaned the room every day to a high standard and always smiled and said hello. Although we had a great holiday, there were a few wee niggles that have stopped me giving this five stars. If you have booked this hotel you will have a great stay, these niggles were pretty minor and didnt mean we did not enjoy our holiday, but I do think the hotel should address these areas :- 1. Paying for safe/wifi. Thanks to helpful reviews on here I knew that we would need to pay for these but I think for the class of hotel, and in this day and age, its pretty poor to charge for a safe, and the wifi was not very good at all. 2. Drinks at lunch. This was a bit of a bugbear for me - it was a real hassle to try to get a second drink at lunch. Given that we were all inclusive and barely drinking any alcohol, I expected to be able to get a couple of soft drinks with my lunch. The wait staff were very difficult to attract back to order further drinks, and on one occassion only brought us one drink when we had asked for two, we asked a third time, and we still never got our drink. i dont think this issue was down to the waitstaff, who were in the main pretty friendly, I think they were understaffed, and that as a result the hotel should put in self service drinks at lunch to rectify this issue. 3. Aloe Grill - There is an all inclusive area in here with drinks/toastie machine/some hot food and ice cream. One day I had a hamburger - it was the worst hamburger I have ever had - the meat was far too cheap. I couldnt eat it and I am not a fussy eater. The quality really should be improved. 4. Check in. After traveling for hours with a wee one, to have to wait ages to check in was really frustrating. There was a huge queue and it took ages to get checked in. Something should really be done to prevent this happening. It sounds like a pretty negative review, and as I said we had a very good holiday, there were just a few niggles, that to be honest would probably prevent me returning.More
