Only go if you have kids!

We have just returned from a weeks all inclusive stay at the Golden Avenida Suites. It was our first family holiday abroad with our 4yr old and 9 month old. This is definitely a family hotel and can imagine if you were there without kids, it would be a nightmare! The rooms were spacious with a good sized balcony. Kids had a separate bedroom so good for adults wanting to stay up a bit later. 'Kitchen' was really just a microwave, fridge and kettle but suited us as all inclusive. All the staff were very friendly and good with the kids. Restaurant was just a large canteen with the kind of food you would expect from a buffet, always found something to eat but got a bit repetitive and were sick of the sight of chips and pasta by the end of the week. Good salad bar and fruit always well stocked. Evening entertainment was good, little pups disco and kennel club kept our 4 yr old entertained. Can't praise the entertainment staff highly enough! Used the kids club twice and he seemed to enjoy it. Fight for sunbeds at 7.30 is ridiculous but we usually managed to get a bed later in the morning. All the prime spots were taken early but we just wanted to be near the kids pool so managed fine. Pools were great and poolside clean and tidy. Hotel is a short taxi ride away from Port Aventura and Costa Caribe water park, both highly recommended. Although, if your kids are shorter than 1.2m, there isn't a huge amount they can go on! Overall, we really enjoyed our holiday at golden Avenida and would return. More

Not a bad hotel, not great but we warmed to it as week went on

Firstly, let's use concise bullet points people! No one wants to read Proust or Tolstoy! - We don't get the 4/5 star reviews as there were too many issues but having said that it's not a bad hotel and has a lot going for it and we actually warmed to it more as the week wore on and we got used to the idiosyncrasies of the hotel......and guests! -Entertainment staff (Dom, Dani,Rachel) 1st class and Hardest working I've come across especially bearing in mind the material they had to work with! -Food was varied although vegetables were a bit of a premium. Thought food choice and quality wasn't too bad although taste wise was a bit bland. Lots of meat and fish variations and the salad bar was always an attractive option although most of the guests looked like they gave that a big dodge! - Restaurant, bar and reception staff very efficient and courteous - Room was spacious and ok although bit basic and didn't feel it was as clean as could've been. Beds were made but didn't feel like much else was done. - I'm sure we were given clean towels when requested (about every other day) but it sometimes felt we were given other peoples that had just dried.....presumably fabric conditioner at the Avienda is as rare as a free sunbed at 8am or up there with considerate guests and their cherubs going to bed quietly the other side of midnight!! - On that subject, oh the joy of p**sed up parents (and probably their kids) going to bed around midnight......let's just say they and their delightful asbo kids were generous in the vocal aplomb. - The evening 'adult' entertainment was pretty good, especially the Bohemian bendy people. The panto went on a bit though and the Spanish Queen tribute band weren't bad - we were half board (not half bored) and it was good to feel we weren't subsidising the greed and wastefulness of the all inclusive patrons. Bar prices were pretty reasonable - It was definitely a family hotel and as we went with our two young kids (5 and 2) we weren't bothered about then ignoring them to spend the days on a sunbed so we never got to see the 8am frenzied sunbed/towel stampede although We have watched YouTube...very funny. -We didn't use Kids club or Thomsons services (excursions etc)so can't comment - Although in a very built up area it's handily placed with only few minutes walk into Salou which is tacky and touristy and about a 15 to 20 minute walk (or 5 minute taxi ride €8 ish) to PortAventura - Salou beach is mobbed and is the nightmare scenario you see on TV or in brochures of no square inch of beach able to be seen from the air......keep your kids on those dog leads that recoil or blink and they're gone! It's not a place to lose sight of any young kids that's for sure. The reviews and comments are pretty similar and repeated but for us, whilst we'd go with Thomson again we wouldn't go back to the Avienda or Salou. Hope that helps and the good news was there wasn't an Ice Bucket challenge in sight!!More

A Great Family Hotel

We have just returned from 10 days half board at this hotel. Overall, we had a great time. The hotel itself is fab, the rooms are modern, clean and the maid service is excellent. We were on the first floor overlooking the pool and bar area, I was worried this might be noisy but the doors to the balcony provide good sound insulation. The rooms are a good size, with everything you need but the kitchen facilities are poor, a microwave but no plates or cutlery, kettle and a couple of cups and saucers. The restaurant has a good selection of foods, but unfortunately the food was never hot! I can't understand why as they sit on hot plates but unless you got it freshly cooked at the counter then it was lukewarm at best. This seems to have been flagged by others previously but I found the same problem. A positive was that if you were half board you could swap your meals around so take lunch or breakfast instead of an evening meal etc - which was great. The pool is excellent, there is a small pool for little ones on the mezzanine level, as well as a splash pool, and a large pool divided into 2 areas for older children. The shallow end is perfect for children learning to swim and was perfect for my younger child. However, the race at 7.30 to get your towels on the sun beds for the day is ridiculous! I have never seen anything like it anywhere else!!! It is ver frustrating having to get up at that time on holiday just to secure yourself a bed, others would leave towels on the beds all day and not even use them until late. Again, I had read about this in previous reviews and had hoped something was being done about it but sadly no, it continues. The day time entertainment was good, the Reps did a good job although some of the Reps are much better than others, namely Charlie, Danni, Dom and Matt….some of the others are a little lacklustre! I was disappointed with the evening entertainment, the Little Pups and Kennel Club for kids early evening was fine but there were several evenings where there was no other entertainment provided - Other Thomson Family resorts have a much better programme. Luckily Cirque Du Soleil was on nearby so we visited that which was a holiday highlight. This resort is also ideally situated for a trip to Barcelona so that is worth considering. Overall, we had a great time and the only things that were a problem are fixable, so come on Thomson make this happen!More

Great family entertainment!

The Thomson reps were all fantastic from the advisors to the kids club staff to the entertainment team. We could not fault them in any way, there was always someone around if needed and the day time and evening entertainment they organised was great! Monday nights I found were the most enjoyed as all the reps joined in to create a show to entertain all ages. They made all of us feel very welcome and often stopped to have a chat to us and the children. The room was lovely with 2 separate rooms for the beds. It also included a sink, fridge, kettle and microwave. Two bad things though was we had a room over looking the road and the cars and passers by were often loud, on occasions waking us up (ask for room over looking pool!). Secondly we found the cleaning of the rooms to be of a poor standard with dust under beds and sometimes the bathroom floor not being cleaned properly. The queuing up for us beds was ridiculous with queues often starting from 6.30am till the doors opened at 8am and the fight for beds began! Overall a great family holiday and would recommend it to others! :)More
