OK hotel, shame about the area

Stayed at the Avenida for 2 weeks 16/08/14 to 30/08/14. As you enter the hotel, it is very clean and tidy and the reception staff are excellent and get you checked in very quickly. We were on early flights therefore the room wasn't available until 12pm but you can put your bags in a holding room with no bother. Once you are out in the pool area, it is very cramped and very little space in the sunny areas. Others have reviewed in relation to trees around the complex and this certainly plays a massive factor of whether you will have sun on your sun bed. In the mornings, if you want to be in the best places, you have to be down in the queue at 8am. If you don't you will end up with half the day in the shade. I joined the sunbed fanatics most mornings but couldn't bring myself to running to get a sunbed!!!!! We went half board and the food is good and there is always plenty of choice although it would be good to have more speciality days instead of just Friday to try and mix it up a bit. Lots of meats and fish dishes and lots of lovely deserts. Ana was lovely with the kids and she always made you feel welcome. We found that the restaurant staff were quite slow getting rid of your used dishes in between courses which I've never had an issue with at any other hotel I have stayed at. The hotel needs to manage this area more closely as the waiting staff never seemed to be in the right place at the right time and you were eating desert with a pile of dishes sat next to you. For a so called 4 star hotel, this to me is unacceptable. Our suite (528) was a great size with a separate bedroom for the kids and a good size main room for us. The aircon was superb and really did keep things cool even though it was roasting outside. One night the aircon turned off so I rang the reception at 2am. The young chap was very helpful and within a minute he was up in our room checking what the issue was. We figured out the patio door contact was loose therefore moved it and it worked straight away. The next day it was fixed and we didn't have a problem again. Towels were changed every day and beds made accordingly. We did however have a very dirty floor and had to ask several times for the staff to sweep and mop the floor especially after being down the beach and sand being brought back. We also noticed that under the beds and in various areas, there was quite a lot of dust and muck which to me is the basics especially for a 4 star hotel. The Thomson reps are fantastic and the kids club is really for the younger kids but they were always friendly and happy to help where they could. Rose and Matt really helpful on the front desk and if you have any queries about the area ask them and they seem to know everything! The hotel itself is very nice although the surrounding area is far less than desirable. We had a pool view room up on the 5th floor and thankfully we were not put on the road side as there was a lot of noise especially on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights when the club up the road was in full swing. I was woken several times by people shouting, screaming from the apartments overlooking the hotel and the noise from the club went on until 6-7am. Thankfully the aircon tended to drown out some of the noise but it meant lack of sleep which is not something I am keen on when I've paid an awful lot of money to try and relax and get energy back after a long year at work! The evening entertainment was quite good although the main viewing area was cramped and difficult to see the entertainment unless you were down when the smaller kids club was on. We tended to go out for a walk and get back just before 9.30 as the kids wanted to watch the entertainment most nights. Happy hour between 8.30 and 9.30 certainly tends to get things pretty busy down there and can save you quite a bit of money on drinks. Just a shame its difficult to get a seat that can have full view of the stage. Not sure what else the hotel can do for the amount of people as the large pillars in the way are pretty key! Most guests were great but I have to say some just had no common sense or respect for others. At varying times of the night, some families would be coming back to the rooms chatting at full volume, banging doors, kids running down the hall etc etc. This would then start early in the morning. Again, I have never stayed in such a place and yes I have had the odd one or two issues in different hotels but this one seemed to be relentless nearly every single night getting woken up with a fright. One tip for the hotel would be to get some signs up in the lifts asking guests to keep the noise down/respect for others etc and then a few dotted in the hallways which might just remind people that there are other people. In other hotels I have stayed in, this sometimes triggers the minds of other. I know its not the hotels fault but it certainly didn't help when being woken up by clubbers at the other side of the hotel early in the morning. I don't think I have been so negative in all of my years on tripadvisor, don't get me wrong, we had a pretty good holiday although there are too many issues in this hotel to give it good to excellent when from experience elsewhere mainly in Spanish islands/mainland stays, I would expect better. We did venture out and about to Portaventura which was one of the reasons to stay in Salou and it didn't let us down. It isn't Florida and I don't think that can be beaten really but it is a decent park, clean and tidy and generally decent for a good family day out. We have a week pass which meant we did a full day and 2 evenings in the park which helped get rides without large queues which was the issue during the day. The water park is great and we had a lovely day out although make sure you have a bit of a tan before you go as you are in the sun for most of the day. We certainly won't be coming back to the Avenida in the future and if we do venture back to go to Portaventura, I would probably stay in Cambrills with a nice view over the sea!More

Excellent Family hotel

stayed with family (4 adults, 2 toddlers ages 1 & 2) could not fault this hotel. the staff are all very helpful. rooms are huge! plenyt space if in a one bedroomed suite, double bed in living area and twin beds in bedroom, great for our son as he is a light sleeper. do ask reception for a matress topper as bed is quite hard, we asked and had one in our room within 30mins!!! excellent service. food is the best we have had in all inclusive, as was the drink. excellent choice and even had cider on tap at 1 euro per pint!!!! not far from beach and bars shops etc. the entertainment staff are fantastic and they work so hard!! our son gets up 6am so it was great having the soft play area to fill the couple of hours before breakfast!!!! poor and surrounding area spotless as were rooms. the only 2 minor things i could fault was no electric socket in bedroom for baby monitors etc and there was no full length mirror in the room at all. all in all this hotel is excellent if you have small kids. we loved it here and would definately return in the future!! the only downside was there was quite a bit of noise if you were on the road side but that didnt affect our stayMore

An good hotel with fantastic staff.

After we were dropped off by Thomson, the hotel at first seemed to be out of the way, but after a few strolls, it was really easy to find our way about the area. The reception staff were efficient and friendly. In fact I have never met such an accommodating crew. Nothing throughout our holiday was too much trouble for them. Our room, was very clean and airy. We were pleasantly surprised that there was a double bed and two single beds in the twin rooms. Another pleasant surprise to us was, it had a microwave, fridge and a kettle. Unusual, as we had booked in as half board. The three lifts were quite fast. The communal areas were kept clean and free of rubbish. The freeform pool was surrounded by sunbeds, and there was always a lifeguard on duty. There is also a small indoor pool and jacuzzi. This is a family hotel, so there is a lot of noise from children as they play. The Thomson reps are there for the children's entertainment, there is nothing for the adults after about 10. The bar shuts at 12. The food is typical buffet style...Warmed under lights and goes luke warm very quickly. It would be better to have smaller trays and change them more often. The final question is...Do I recommend the Avenida Suites. The answer is Yes. I shall qualify that by saying what I have said initially...The front of hotel staff, work wonderfully well and do everything to make your break into a holiday.More

Excellent but take ear-plugs

We took our 3 daughters (10,8,8) for two weeks in August 2014. We had requested a room on the upper floors, away from the street, which we were given. We did have to wait a couple of hours to access the room, but got changed and went to the poolside straightaway, there is a room to leave luggage. We had an apartment with 5 beds. It was cosy but the balcony was large. Small kitchenette with fridge and microwave so you could prepare your own lunch or dinner if required. Beds were hard, should have mentioned it but put up with it. The room (and hotel) was kept very clean, and the staff were all very friendly. We were on half-board, the restaurant food was good, with lots of choice, and the Thomson staff had successfully trialled a scheme to get the children to eat/try vegetables and fruit, with stickers and certificates. This was a great success with our girls, who eat healthily anyway. Ana, the restaurant manager, was so friendly and helpful. There was Happy Hour in the bar. The hotel staff unlocked the door to the pool terrace at 8am, by that time the queue to reserve the sunbeds was out to the lifts. The spot by the door was apparently taken by 7am, to get the beds in the sun all day, but as long as you didn't expect to get beds at 11am, you would be ok. The pool area was clean, apart from a few guests who seemed to think the rubbish was whisked away by the garbage fairy. The pools were great, a shallow toddler pool on a separate terrace, the main pool, with life guard, and an indoor pool, with an indoor and outdoor jacuzzi-type pool. There was a park for toddlers, another for older children, a small football area, and mini golf. As well as all the kids club and poolside activities, there was plenty to do for all ages. We went out in the resort after dinner, walking round the shops (think Kiss Me Quick hats), to the Bosc Adventure nearby, where the girls tried zip-wire and rock-climbing, to see Cirque du Soleil up at Portaventura, and up to the harbour to see the fireworks on Aug 15th, a bank holiday and important festival. The fireworks were fantastic, go early, have a drink and get a good place to watch. We hired a car from the airport for a few days and went to Tarragona, lots of Roman ruins, and Montserrat, monastery up in the mountains. Many trips can be bought from reps, hotel or locally. The beach at La Pineda is beautiful, and much less crowded than Salou beach. The only downside was the night-time noise, especially the first weekend. There are campsites and many apartments nearby, and the occupants would bang bins and sing loudly when going back to their accommodation, between 4am and 6am. The police occasionally drove through as a deterrent, one couple were glad to be going home for a sleep. But we had a fantastic holiday and hope to return in a couple of years.More
