Like a film set, the Gold River lets you wander through time – right from the dizzy beginnings of the gold rush to the opulence of the early 19th century. Imagine log cabins along a winding river, forgotten mines in the forest and a small railroad complete with a puff-and-toot train.

There are five places to stay here – City Hall, Sheriff's Office, Lucy's Mansion, Main Street and Old Station. All guests check in to reception at the City Hall. And as the names suggest, Lucy's Mansion and the Grand Hotel are rather impressive. Think high glass ceilings and opulent decor. Walk into the Old Station, meanwhile, and you'll be stepping inside what looks like a real working ticket office. Don't be fooled though – behind the scenes you'll find comfy rooms with all the mod-cons, such as satellite TV, kitchenettes and air-conditioning. Step further back in time and you'll find the Bungalows. Beside the river, these log cabins are historically accurate and have air-conditioning, a kitchenette and satellite TV.

As for food, you can forget having to lasso your own dinner. The Grand Opera restaurant is the perfect spot for an a la carte meal for two. That said, there's also the Lucy's Mansion restaurant. With views across a pool and garden, it bills itself as an exclusive place to dine.

Last but not least there's nothing archaic about the facilities. You've got three swimming pools, four restaurants, three bars and a mini market. Plus little ones get their own kids' club.
