Basic, clean, fantastic location

We stayed at the end of October 2014 for a week. Being so late in the season, the swimming pool was freezing, so we didn't go in it much, but luckily this hotel is perfect for exploring the Costa Daurada. Cap Salou itself has several lovely beaches within five or ten minutes walk of the hotel. We spent a lovely day going in and out of the sea, with little fishes swimming around us. Just brilliant. When we were there things in Cap Salou were closing down as it was the end of the season, but there are a few nice businesses in the area. We particularly liked Route 66 cafe/bar in the village. Hotel staff are great - really helpful and friendly. Each room has a safe, and you can have the key for a €10 deposit. Great for keeping valuables secure. The room was cleaned most days - just a quick spruce and making the beds, which was fine. They take a damage deposit at the start of your stay (or a credit card number they can charge breakages to). There's also a local tourist tax, which is paid to the Catalan government. It's not much, and it helps to protect the heritage of Catalonia. It is worth paying a bit extra for a sea view if you can. We had a brilliant view from the fifth floor, all down the coast and could see the top of the highest rides at Portaventura too! The only downside is that the sea view rooms overlook the pool area, which is where the kids play at night, often until late. If you are bothered by noise, you may be better off on the other side of the building. Beds are comfortable, and there are blankets in the wardrobe should anyone get cold. Didn't need to use the heating or air conditioning during our stay as the temperature was just comfortable. We didn't eat at the hotel much. Pizzas were OK but nothing special. Chips were fine. We used the on-site supermarket a bit, and this was OK. Other supermarkets locally had a better selection, but for basics like bread, cheese, butter, fruit and veg I would say the prices were similar to Sainsbury's. It gets expensive if you want to buy "typical British" items like Heinz soup or beans. They import British goods, but you have to pay for the extra costs involved. If you are prepared to take a chance on local brands, which are honestly just fine, it's not as poor value as some people would have you believe. They get fresh bread in every day and have the British tabloid papers. If they had any other British papers, I clearly wasn't up early enough to know about it! The supermarket also has a 'beach store' where you can pick up all the little things you forgot, like beach towels, sunglasses, inflatables, goggles etc. Brilliant. They also let customers use their machine to inflate the inflatables. Right outside the hotel there are bus stops and this is the best thing about this hotel - really easy to get anywhere you want to go. You can get a bus 'credit card' from the hotel reception and top it up with credit which makes getting around very simple. All journeys locally are 1 credit for adult or child. We used the bus to explore this lovely stretch of coast, taking trips to Tarragona, Cambrils, Salou and Portaventura theme park. Buses run until really late and the drivers and other Plana Bus staff are really helpful about bus numbers. We bought Portaventura tickets from our Thomson rep at the hotel - it was 2 days for the price of 1, which was good value. We didn't use the extra day because we managed to see all we wanted of the park in a day, but for those who want to ride the rollercoasters more than once this would be a great deal. Good tip for those with kids - the TV is obviously in Spanish, but there's a language button on the remote - if you can find the Disney channel or one with Spongebob on (he seems to be on a lot) you can hit the button to change the dub from Spanish to English, which will keep them occupied whilst you shower, dress, cook or whatever. There is some kids entertainment, and some general family entertainment each evening. We didn't bother with this as we were out during the evenings. We caught the back end of it some evenings on the way in. It wasn't really our kind of thing - but the people taking part seemed to be enjoying it, which is the important thing. The disco was a bit noisy some nights but it wasn't ridiculous and it's all over by midnight. Overall, I would recommend this place as a base for exploring Costa Daurada, If you get out and use the brilliant local bus services you'll be able to see this lovely area for a fraction of the cost of some of the organised tours.More

A good family hotel

Very clean, and well appointed hotel, the kids loved the evening entertainment.....even thought they didn't win the bingo !!! 3 minutes walk to the local beach, down some steps so not ok for the less mobile, but the beach was perfect for kids !!! The hotel had its own supermarket which was handy as the next one was some trek away ! Nice pool..........but bloomin cold ! Friendly staff, good cleaning regime, I would return.............just not in the height of season ! The WIFI was NOT free to use in the room, you got half an hour free on the hotels computer if you bought something from the bar.More

paul h,

The best self catering hotel ever!!

We stayed here 21st - 28th October 2014 as a family of 5. This was a last minute holiday which was amazingly cheap therefore, my expectations were not high. I was pleasantly surprised upon arrival by this clean, friendly and welcoming hotel. My 3 kids loved the kids club with Eddie who works really hard to keep everyone entertained. The rooms were spacious and cleaned everyday apart from Sunday. The location is in a peaceful area with little beach coves close by. The weather for us was the high point it was warm and sunny everyday, excellent weather for the end of October. I do feel that they should heat the pool though as it is in the shade most of the day and was cold. Buses to Salou run directly from outside the hotel and there's lots more to do and see in Salou. Overall an excellent place to stay.More

Iftica A,

great last minute holiday

we booked this self catering holiday a week before we flew as a last minute weeks break away. on arrival our first thoughts were looks great for the money we paid, it had a supermarket, restaurant, bar, 2 swimming pools one being for little children, playarea, football nets, amusement arcade area, kids club, and roof top terrace everything looked great. at check in we were asked to pay a weekly rent fee which everyone has to pay on arrival and also paid for safe which was 30 euro and receive 10 euro deposit back. we stayed in room 402 and it was fantastic plenty of room and storage a separate bedroom n large bathroom with a large balcony. it had kettle, microwave, 2 ring cooker top, fridge NO freezer and all basic utensils needed for a self catering holiday. our first day the boys wanted to go in the pool as they love swimming but the water was FREEZING my 8 year old normally gets in no matter what but it was that cold he jumped in and was straight back out hence us not having a pool day for the rest of the holiday. as it was start of close down period there was only 2 restaurants open at the bottom of a hill for the first few days but then they shut for the end of the week so we ate in the restaurant within the complex but NEVER AGAIN ! we ordered 2 childrens meals which were ok then ordered 2 lasagnas both arrived stone cold so were sent back ! they do have a snack bar where you can order takeaway food and either eat it in your room or the bar area and they do the most lovely pizzas ever we ended up having a few on a night time. if you like entertainment for the kids then there is a hour slot of games and dancing every night between 8-9 ( most nights it started late ) followed by an hour of bingo 9-10 every night for money winnings but in the hour is just 1 game. after bingo there was a quiz night, karaoke night, magician night, caberet night of which we saw it was ok. the apartments are situated on the out skirts of salou called cap salou where it is either a 50 minute walk in to salou centre or a 10 minute bus ride costing 9 euros ish for 4 people of what ever age, a taxi is roughly 9 euros too. the bus stop is directly outside the apartments and there is a little train that comes twice in an hour we went out a few days to catch this and finally managed it on our last night. cap salou is so quiet so if your looking for a peaceful holiday then its for you there are 4/5 covey beaches we found within a 15 minute walk and most times we were the only ones on the beach it was lovely ... the beaches are full of wasps & flys and there are no bins areas so we were forever killing or running away from them we booked with Thomson and there were a few trips that could be booked with them which we did .... a trip to Barcelona football camp followed by free time in Barcelona centre before being collected to come back. we booked on the weds morning to go Monday ( our last full day) and on the Saturday came back from the beach to find a note from the rep to say it was cancelled GUTTED ! I went to see the rep for a refund and was told the trip was cancelled prior to our rep meeting nd we should never have been booked on to it in the first place but was informed 3 days afterwards so we had no time to change the day. as we paid by card the rep tried to pop thru a refund but his colleague had input our trip on his card machine and the rep was unable to refund until the other rep put it through his machine .... still waiting for refund !More

Perfect family holiday, highly recommended

Beautiful and peaceful location, dozens of quiet coved beaches, clean well presented hotel, with great English speaking staff who was very helpful, good supermarket on site with all your essentials and more, free wifi with any purchase from the bar, pool not very warm but having the sea on your doorstep more than makes up for this, entertainment man Eddie was great with the kids, evening entertainment not my cup of tea but each to there own, overall fantastic place for a great family holiday, and will definitely be booking again in the near future, thankyou sunclub :)More
