This is a very good 4star plus hotel . Exellent food , rooms and facilities, attentative staff ! Since we stayed a few years previous the hotel has gone through a revamp , new restaurant, reception and en suite bathrooms. It is in a good location with cafes and beech only yards away .You can chose an East or West facing balcony .Our room had twin beds ,our en suite possessed a walk in shower which was spotlessly!More

We stayed here for one week in January and loved it. In spite of the time of year the hotel was bustling. The public areas are huge and impressive. Our room was spacious and well furnished, with a side view of the sea, and the food in the restaurant was excellent. We did try the Spanish restaurant at beach level but were disappointed with the choice and quantity of the food, otherwise it would be a 5 star rating.More

Second visit to Riu Monica
Having visited 2 years ago and enjoyed our stay we made another visit and were just as impressed as before (see my previous review). The Hotel has been refurbished since our last visit. The entrance was the first thing we noticed - re positioned reception desk and a much more modern area altogether. We had the same room as before and that was also modernised (but we had no complaints or problems previously) the bathroom area now had a superb, large walk-in shower area which was so easy to use, much appreciated being an elderly couple. We found using the 2 lifts right down to the pool and gate to promenade easier with sloping paths in places rather than steps. Coming back through the gate we found putting your card in the slot was no longer the system and you required a code to the new keypad which we had not been told about. However that was soon sorted. As before everything spotlessly clean, staff very friendly and lots of food selections at both breakfast and dinner. Now the hotel is a "Couples" it was somewhat quieter than last time. We are already deciding when we can make a further visit.More
We spent a very comfortable stay in this hotel over Easter. As previous reviewers have stated it is situated in a great position, next to the beach & far enough from the centre of Nerja to be quiet, but close enough for a stroll in the evening. We were welcomed with a complimentary glass of Cava when booking in which was a nice touch & directed to our room on floor -1. Whilst initially disappointed that we wouldn't get the best of views, we were pleasantly surprised with not only the view, but by the quality of the room & it's walk in shower. In fact by the end of the week we decided that if we ever came back we would prefer to be lower down because we were close to all of the amenities & didn't have to wait for lifts. The food in the restaurant at both breakfast & dinner was fine. I would however echo other comments that the tables are far too close together. I suggest eating breakfast on the terrace outside as it makes for a more enjoyable start to the day. I would also suggest using the a la carte restaurant at some point during your stay. Although the choice is limited, the dining experience is much better. Nerja itself is a pretty place, but I did get annoyed by the number of beggars & hawkers on the streets, which rather took the edge off an evening stroll. Would we come back? Possibly if the deal was right.More
Good value, but weak points
A perfect spot to stay; it was a great location for a hotel as it was next to the beach within easy walking access of Nerja village. We would return as we liked the hotel and location. The communal areas had been refurbished in an attractive design and were spotless Attractive gardens and outside area which were well maintained Comfortable beds and quiet location Rooms had been refurbished and were very clean, fairly large and well presented. Pleasant and efficient staff at all points of contact, which includes the hotel cats. Tasty varied menu with plenty of food available. Gym and indoor pool are not extensive but are well maintained. In February these facilities were hardly used so the size was not a problem, and guests at the hotel were mature in years; very few people were under 60. Why it felt more like a three star than a four star. Although the dining room was clean and attractive, it was a bit of a bun fight at some meal times. There were so many tables and the way they the furniture was arranged in the room, meant diners had to negotiate the maze of tables and chairs, to get to the buffet. The tables and chairs were plentiful and placed too close together for comfort and privacy, in my opinion. At breakfast time there was the added hazard of navigating around furniture obstacles and fellow diners, whilst carrying teapots of boiling water back to the table. At busy times, it felt more like a workâs canteen or school dining room than hotel dining. Our shower room had a bit of a whiff of drains which the cleaning lady had tried her best to eliminate, but it usually returned. I would have expected a bath, rather than a bath sized shower. Somebody, a previous guest perhaps, had scribbled on the white wall of the room. No tea and coffee facilities in rooms. Free parking was very limited. I must add that we had booked through Thomsons, like RIU Hotels, a member of the TUI group, resulting in the flight being with Thomsons Airways, who sent us an email halfway through the week to say that the return flight was to be delayed by 3 hours (this is against CAA quidelines), which we did manage to pick up. The local Rep was unaware of the change. This meant that we missed the last train home from Gatwick, and had to stay in a hotel, and return home the following day. However, the price paid was extremely competitive.More
