Close to the beach!
Everything about the Rui Monica is first class, I have thought long and hard to find fault but there are none, staff and amenities great rooms spotless swimming pool and surrounding area excellent nothing else to add.More
We booked a last minute break at the Riu Monica and were not disappointed. The hotel is well managed with a happy staff who are pleased to help in any way they can The hands on approach of the management certainly makes a difference and their prescence, espcially at meal times, was noted. The personal approach by the under manager and the restaurant manager made you feel "special" even though only one of a number of guests. The choice of food at brakfast and dinner was immense and we enjoyed every morsel. Our room on the fifth floor was roomy, and well looked after by Christina. We had a fab view of the coast and mountains. The hotel is spotlessly clean. We would have no reservations in returning here. Well done Riu.More
Lovely hotel in a delightful resort
Stayed here for 2 weeks November/December and it poured most of the time! Unfortunately the hotel did not provide any daytime activities for rainy days, so got through a few books!. Did not venture in to the indoor pool as we heard it was cold. The hotel has been recently re-furbished and has some of the most perfectly designed bathrooms and bedrooms with excellent storage. The public rooms were also beautifully furnished. We were staying half-board so had to fend for ourselves at lunch-time. Unfortunately they were not up to scratch on dietary requirements. I am Coeliac and I was given a gluten free hot roll at breakfast but I had to buy my own cereal. Every evening I had to ask what was gluten-free and the chefs who served at the buffet were not particularly knowledgeable or helpful. We had a fridge in the room and fortunately there were supermarkets within 10 minutes walk and lots of restaurants across the road where we could get lunch. We took the local bus to a couple of nearby towns on non-rainy days. Nerja is a charming town and well worth a visit.More
Lovely hotel - we will be back
This was our first visit to the Monica, and we are very hopeful that it will not be our last. The check in was welcoming, smooth and friendly, with Lola and her team. The reception area is huge, spotlessly clean and beautifully refurbished, with plenty of comfy seating. The rooms are very nice, spacious, nicely decorated and very comfortable, with almost all you could need (it would have been nice to have had tea making facilities in the room). We were delighted with our 'partial sea view', which overlooked the beach from the balcony. As far as we could work out, all 'partial sea view' rooms have at least a glimpse of the sea. The bathroom was equally nicely decorated, with a large walk-in shower, amongst all the normal facilities. There was a plentiful supply of shower gel/shampoo, soap, shower cap and toilet paper, and although some have mentioned the small size of the towels, they did the job and could be changed as often as you liked. The housekeepers were lovely, always a smile and an 'Ola'. Our only slight gripe with the room was the soundproofing, although a lot of the blame for this lies with our neighbouring guests who thought little of having their tv blaring away for up to 15 hours a day (get a life!), or clacking around in stiletto heels on the tiled floors! Even though our room was situated near the bar area, we had no disturbance from the entertainment, which we did not see and therefore cannot comment on. The dining room was fairly standard for this type of hotel, with plenty of choice of hot and cold food at breakfast and dinner. You could easily have something different on every day of a two week stay, and the food was equal to the best we have had on a package holiday. I had read that the tables were very close together, which is true, but didn't bother us, and we were able to chat to our dining neighbours, which was good. The waiting service is brisk and efficient, again, like many other hotels we have stayed in. There was a good range of wines and other drinks to choose from, although you did have to pay for bottled water - tap water did not seem to be an option. We only had lunch once at the Monica, and regretted not eating there on some other days. A ham and cheese toasted sandwich consisted of two rounds of sandwiches, plus chips and coleslaw and was really good value. The chicken and roasted veg baguette was very tasty, plenty of it and again, good value. Washed down by a litre of sangria, it was a lovely lunch! The hotel is situated right next to a sandy beach - ok, not the biggest beach in the world (we come from Cornwall, so are spoiled as far as beaches go!), but it was clean and inviting. The outdoor pool was a but too chilly for that time of year, but was surrounded by plenty of sunbeds, and even in January we were able to sunbathe on three days. There is an indoor heated pool (follow the signs for the gym), which was lovely and not too busy. A short walk away is the town centre, which is attractive. We especially enjoyed the occasional ice cream on the Balcon de Europe, and nearby are the Nerja caves (a must-see attraction reachable by land train or a yomp on foot if you want to get a good look at the aqueduct on the way). Not far away is the very pretty, and award-winning village of Frigiliana, which we loved so much, we made a return visit. We had booked through Thomson and took advantage of trips to Gibraltar and Cordoba, as well as hiring a car to go to Granada and the Alhambra palace. For those wishing to hire a car, we booked through Keddy, which is part of Europcar. Their offices are just a couple of doors down from the hotel. All in all, we had a very pleasant two weeks at the Monica and look forward to coming backMore
Cannot fault this hotel. The staff are on the ball. Food is the best we have had in a Spanish hotel. Great atmosphere, comfortable, clean and a huge bedroom with a table and chairs in the room so we didn't just have to sit on the bed. One downside is that we struggled with the wifi but as we don't use it much it wasn't a problem, we would use it in cafes, etc, to check emails.More
